Stripped oil drain hole (my temporary solution for review)

I have done a lot of searching through past threads and got opinions from the wise and not so wise. Ideas from complete replacement of the pan to helicoil to oversized self tapping plugs. Do to monetary restraints a replacement of the pan or having a shop install a helicoil righ now is not an option.

I needed a temporary fix to get me to the winter when I take the bike in for the winter and can take my time to pull the pan myself. I tried one of those rubber stoppers by Oil tite and it was a complete piece of crap. I bought a piggyback oversized plug but couldnt get the damn thing to grab. I was just about to borrow a tap and go the larger plug route when it hit me:banghead:. I have been reading that Gixxers are M14 X 1.25. the same as a spark plug. I also saw a video on you tube with a guy who takes a longer bolt and cuts it to utilize the other 1/2" of threads never touched before. Finding a M14 X 1.25 bolt is damn near impossible so what I did was I bough a spark plug with 1" of threads and put a bit of lock tite and screwed the ***** in. I know its silly and looks funny if you look down at it but my thoughts were there is no pressure like in a piston cylinder, temperature is not an issue and it already has its own compression washer. i hand threaded it all the way in without issue and gave a final torque.

The plug has been on there over several hot cold cycles and not a drop. I get that this is not the right way and my intentions are to replace as such, I just want to know if this has been done by anyone on this forum before.

Please forgive me if this has been discussed as I did to quite a lengthy search.

Hey, if it holds, good on ya! Thanks for the share; it's great to have ideas like that for an emergency

Please, can we get a picture of this? This is pretty damn choice.

Don't know what made you think of it, but well done.

Good conversation topic at the next pose fest - "Hey did you see my bike, I have the latest, external plugs coming out of the bottom of the oil pan, new technology"

I'm in for a pic of this too. If it works, great. Just be careful about breaking the top half off, because then you just have a hollow metal ring left.

You should cut off the exposed portion of the plug to avoid it potentially getting caught on something.

Im going to on the weekend as it does stick down a bit. I was going to cut it and fill it with JB weld. I was just so anxious to put it in to test my theory. I just got fed up draining the oil 3 times playing with the other fixes.

Apparently a crank pulley bolt for a Honda Civic will do the trick also as its m14 X 1.25 X 35mm long. Im sourcing one now and may be able to use that instead of trimming the spark plug.

I'm sure you know this, but the spark plugs are hollow and filled with ceramic. So if the ceramic is to break off the oil will leak down the middle of it.

Yes I know, thats why I'm cutting it and plugging with JB Weld. The ceramic would have to shatter all the way through and not jsut snap off. if is just snaps off the copper core and interior ceramic would still block the oil. No? Ive looked at cross sections of spark plugs, never actually broke one to see what happens.

You may be surprised at what they carry in stock and what they can get in for you in a couple of days. The Brafasco by our shop actually had an M14x1.25 tap in stock a couple of weeks ago when I went in to order one.

JB weld, drill and tap. That stuff is gold. Fixed a cracked rad with it almost 7 years ago and it still holds the fluids back.
