Strange Grinding/crunching noise

In case you haven't picked up on it yet, you cannot diagnose a noise over the internet.

You're going to have to get the bike to someone that knows what they're doing.
If the bike runs ok, has power and doesn't overheat; it is not the bottom end... so draining the oil to look for motor parts is going no where.

What the problem may be is where the starter clutch chain ring is welded onto the back of the clutch basket are known to break on EX500s. Remove the left engine cover and use a mirror to inspect the weld on the back of the clutch basket assembly. If it broken it is possible to clean it up and re-weld it.
