My bike was stolen from my condo parking space underground.

My question is, if the building finds out that I now park my bike in my attached locker, would that be a safety hazard? Could they ban me from doing it?

Contact your building management or whatever. Try to argue that it was their fault your bike got stolen?

My friend has 2 parking spots and 3 vehicles (including his bike). They said only 1 vehicle per spot. He ended up parking all 3 on his two spots regardless. Condos have really ****ing stupid rules considering that the parking spots are like $12,000 a piece.

It's probably against fire code, condo insurance and condo rules for common spaces.

I'd safely bet yes they could ban you. Probably fine ya too.

Now for the poster above, explain to me how the hell it is the condos fault the bike got stolen?

Really? Maybe 20 years ago they were.

I think he was trying to argue the fact that since it's an underground parking, there shouldn't have been said unauthorized persons in there in order to steal it.

OP, does your parking not have cameras? Mine is COVERED with cameras. I think it would be very difficult for someone to do that in mine.

I'm pretty sure a "not responsible for lost or stolen items" clause is somewhere in the rules for usages of common spaces. Even if he does own it.

I'm just trying to point out that the condo corporation would never accept responsibility for a vehicle being stolen.

I know what you meant. =) I think that statement about arguing they could be half responsible at least was just wishful thinking.

Let me look in my book of all knowledge, i'll get back.

Or ask somebody who actually knows at the condo.

Because I've entered my friends condo before and tailgated somebody to get into the garage and park next to his bike to work on it. Security also never called up to tell my friend I'm here/confirm he knows about a visitor. This was before they started recognizing me based on my bike (now they just open it for me!).

Point is, if I wanted to jack his bike, all I need is a caravan, tell them I'm visiting someone, tail some dude opening the underground parking and proceed to jack the bike. This is not fair for those that live in condos. I understand that, ultimately, the onus is on the owner to have theft but it shouldn't be that easy. No chain, alarm, voodoo magic is going to stop somebody when it's that easy to get in!

Really? Maybe 20 years ago they were.

That's how much a buddy sold his for recently.

Is bike theft in condo parking a big problem in Toronto? The stories I read on this forum spook me... Is there any way to ensure it's not stolen?

What are cameras going to do when the van rolls in with a stolen plate and two guys with hoods that don't look up jump out and toss your bike in the back?

I would imagine not much but when security does their rounds, cameras are everywhere, concierge is there 24/7 with cameras rolling, everyone knows everyone so strangers stand out, there's a panic button on every second or third pillar on both levels, you tend to feel a little more safe. There have never been any thefts in my underground parking since I've lived here (3 years) and there are plenty of bikes. I guess the security at my condo does preventative measures to ensure our safety, as much as they can, at least. So far, so good.

Review your condo documents, that 1" thick pile of paper that you had to sign when you purchased your unit. That sets out the rules that you, your condo board and their property manager and other staff need to follow. If they don't specifically say anything about it, then you have a fighting arguement should someone complain.

Find a condo with very strict access policies. I worked at a threesome of condos at Jane/Rutherford and the gatehouse needed to call up to the resident for EVERY visitor, no answer, no entry, then they were also required to buzz in to get into the underground parking. If you tailgated in, someone was sent down to intercept you before you got in the building, plate numbers were recorded, etc. etc.

The only people who got in without going through 2-3 layers of security were residents and emergency services..

Generally speaking condos that provide in-house security (i.e. they work for the condo corp) are better since contracted security generally don't give the furry crack of a rat's behind.

That's how mine is and that was one of the reasons I bought here. It's funny because one of my friends who comes to visit would always joke around with security but in a sarcastic way. They showed him. Every single time he came to visit me, even tho they recognized him, they would stop him and call up to tell me he was here. lol It was their way of getting back at him for being a dick. haha

lol i was about to say where the hell can you get a $12,000 parking spot?! mine was at least twice that, 3 years ago.

I hope that wasn't downtown.

Oh....it's supposed to cost more? lol

See the problem with the building I'm currently a CSM for is that their residents get so bitchy and ornery about being called for every visitor, their property management has instructed the security guys there to let EVERYONE in, and not to contact the resident directly. The worst they can do is say "call the resident at XXX (buzzer number)". I think that's idiotic and I've pointed out to the client (the board of directors) that this defeats the purpose of "Security". They don't seem to care too much.

Depending on where it is. My grandparents sold their parking spot for $62,000. Bay street condo, right by the elevator, no "neighbour" spot, it's a stall.

If the security sees someone regularly (my dad for example, every Saturday) they will just let him in without making him buzz up or calling me but if I want that to change, I just tell them. IE: I cancelled my care givers because they were morons and they would just let them up since they recognized them so I had to tell them NOT to let her up anymore. I would rather be called or informed in some way (buzzed, etc) of someone coming in. That's the whole purpose. Those people who complained about security trying to make the building safe is just retarded.

That's nuts about the cost of parking! My parking is included and I have a HUGE space. It's the last spot so it's quite big. I can fit my car and probably at least 6 bikes (close together of course) in my ONE spot.
