Stop Sale Order - All BMW Internal Combustion Motos Are Currently “Do Not Sell”

That seems pretty extreme. I guess they're worried about the EPA coming down hard on them?

Wow. Stop Sell orders are not the kinda thing any company takes lightly.

I’ll put down 10€ on a VW type situation.

More info:

Following a recent quality analysis, BMW is pursuing measures to further evaluate the material used in a component of its motorcycle evaporative system, which may not have been produced to material specifications.

As a result, BMW of North America is issuing a temporary, voluntary stop sale for all new and pre-owned BMW motorcycle models in dealer inventory, except for the CE-04.

This temporary stop sale is not safety related and BMW owners may continue to ride their motorcycles as normal.

Emission-control issue will do it, and for them to stop sales of all models, it must be a shared component. Fuel cap, evap canister, hoses, etc.

Ouch.

Could be as simple as a bad warning sticker---that one happened to BMW a few years ago.

Meh. It will get sorted. My FJR went through a warning to "do not ride" and a full transmission replacement. FJR Owners forum was all a panic. Was all dealt with just fine.

I noticed a username change there.
AllistonGT now?
:)

Is this related to the type of carbon that is used in the evap cannisters that many of these bikes have?

The official statement I read said it was related to a component that may not meet spec. I haven't seen anything that specified which component (nor if it even affects emissions or if it just maybe affects emissions and they want to avoid the hammer).

A lot of hush time will fuel speculation, BMW should get out front of this.

BMW states: “Following a recent quality analysis, BMW is pursuing measures to further evaluate the material used in a component of its motorcycle evaporative system, which may not have been produced to material specifications."

That looks like a carefully worded statement - I wonder whether it was BMW or the EPA that did the analysis?

Evap systems aren't even required on motorcycles in the North American market except in California. Some manufacturers choose to make 'em all the same.

Yep, canisterectomy is one of the more popular mods for the BMW bikes. A lot of talk about how the charcoal can back up into the fuel system and cause damage, so they justify it as a necessity and not aesthetic or frivolous.

Motorcycles have had to meet EPA standards since 2008. I don’t think there is a requirement for a canister, but motorcycles do need to be
Compliant.

Any update from BMW?
The activated carbon in the EVAP canister fits the "most likely" category and there has been sustained discussion on various forums of the likelihood of this being/not being a cause of mechanical damage.
Without further entering into that discussion, would it be wise to just do a canister delete?
(I notice that the canister delete video does not talk about the removal of the re-entry filter nor about the electrical gizmo that is plugged into it, hmm)

Stop sale has been lifted.

Software update needed. Safety concerns over angle rate sensor. Some safety features not active. Anti wheelie control.
More clearer info will trickle out.
