Stolen Triumph Street Triple 765 R - Toronto

if you can put a couch in your apartment, cant you put your bike too?

I saw a couple of guys trying to get their Gixxer 750 onto the elevator in my apartment.. I tried to help... the 3 of us couldn't manage as the bike had to be wheelied in cause the elevator was too narrow for the gixxer to fit in... I saw them install disk locks and bike covers and parking thier cars in front of the bike to block it from view... I did the same to my bike..

Both of our bikes ended up getting nicked..

You guys need to start putting your toys in steel sheds and if the building management doesn't like the visual appearance of a steel container in an underground parking lot that you rent, then tell them to pound salt.

I like this idea. Just buy a row of spots and drop a shipping container there.

No bueno. You'll get kicked out toot suite. If you are miraculously lucky or connected and the board let's you get away with it, the first annual sprinkler inspection will end that project.

They will just steal the shed too at this rate. its a constant problem in every building downtown now. You can spend $750K on a place and its still a waiting game of when it will be stolen if you try to keep a nice bike.

I have a friend who used to live in a condo downtown with crazy rules. You couldn't bring bicycles in the elevator and had to use the parking lot racks to store them. Management would throw a fit if they saw it. The thieves quickly figured it out and anything decent was stolen.

The workaround he found was to take his wheels off at his car and carry the frame in the elevator. Then do a second trip for the wheels. Repeat in reverse every time he wanted to go out. The daily argument with security was its not a bicycle - its bicycle parts. They eventually turned a blind eye to it.

Someone needs to come up with a motorcycle dolly to do the same. "its an art installation!"

They need to find a way to make it work.
Out of sight out of mind.
"They will just steal the shed too at this rate" maybe it will be empty of bike at the time and full of tracking devices.

or you can just let it continue to happen an pay higher and higher insurance premiums to keep the crooks in motorcycles.

It's not that hard to make it work, there is just zero will to do it. For s few thousand in engineering and physical work, you could drop a sprinkler head into the shed. Sadly condos are for the masses, not for the individual so you would never get the board to agree to allow the work. Hell, most give a hard no yo a simple anchor.

:cautious: put wheels on it that don't turn and call it your car,
they should not put motorcycles on a dangerous storage list, they are no more likely to combust then a car.
Vent the container. Give them a hard no back.
Fill the container with toxic gas that won't burn or remove all the air, there has to be a way.

or you can just let it continue to happen an pay higher and higher insurance premiums to keep the crooks in motorcycles.

I wonder, do cops who own bikes live in condos? And have them stolen? ?

Hmm.. probably not. with their earnings they're probably got a nice house in the burbs somewhere..

I used to sit on a condo board, between crackheads breaking into storage lockers and actual inbuilding renters stealing rugs from the lobby, All get victimized, no one is immune.

Most leave after they blow a gasket during annual meetings about how security will not intervene in criminal acts on the property sighting liability issues, but they will aggressively confront unit owners over very arbitrary condo infractions. Most just move out of the city and move where homes and insurance rates are much cheaper and they don’t have to sweat about their property being taken.

The only success stories I’ve seen with bikes in condos are anchors with hardened steel chains (most condos will not allow anchors it messes with the structure of the building), they avoid them but it won’t stop thieves. Seen plenty of CCTV where angle grinders make quick work of locks and or the chain. The other being GPS trackers, I got a few stories from guys locating there bikes in less then desirable areas, most damaged from being on its side in a back of a van. I’ve seen cars get recovered, but bikes have a terrible recovery rate, it’s something like 70/30 for cars and 20/80 for bikes.

The problem probably won’t stop, I think there are enough groups doing this that even a big bust wouldn’t put a dent in the thefts. Browsing through social media some of the biggest GTA motorcycle groups are posting stolen bike notifications almost daily. Very very depressing.

Wow, sorry to hear. Did it have a cover? Bike thefts have been around for ages. Back in the '70s, my buddy blocked his Sportster in front of his Beetle within his parents car port. Some crazy guys wanted it so bad they cut the chain locks and dragged it over the top of the Beetle and took it away.

Back in the day, we used to drape a dust cover over our bikes with the Yamaha logo imprinted on it. Nowadays, it would be more of a target for thieves.

So sorry man :(
Hope you either get it back in perfect condition +$5000 worth of modifications for some reason, or (more likely) that insurance pays out.

What do you think for the next one? Another Striple?
Is this common in Toronto? I thought bike theft was a much bigger problem in Europe :|

Its common for sport bikes. As the faired ones are becoming less popular due to the insurance squeeze we'll see the nakeds get hit next.

Yup sport bikes are big targets by the organized thieves but it seams the naked bikes are not safe either.

Had my 08 cbr1000rr stolen back on 2016 and, at the that time the investigators said they were seeing in some cases a rental car following the van that stole bikes in the previous thefts. They believed that in most cases the thieves had staked out the garage before hand and most likely in a rental vehicle that followed behind residents inside.

In my case, the thieves went straight to my bike. They went through 4 levels of parking and they passed at least 6 other bikes. They were in and out in less the 3 minutes.

I’m %100 sure they came back for my other bike, I ended up moving it elsewhere. Let’s just say after that I am cognoscente of who tries to follow me in and to cars waiting outside the garage.

I inquired about these rental companies and the response I got by investigators wad only what they called “problem companies”, meaning they don’t cooperate with investigators or that they will rent to anyone that pays cash. ??

How about tell your local political representative Toronto needs a bait bike program. If you are high risk,
volunteer your bike to have a tracker on it so you can call immediately call when that one gets stolen.
might work, might not.
