Co-op education.

5 years of alternating school and work terms for a four-year degree meant 0 summers off, but 0 debt when I graduated. Also 2 years of relevant work experience on my resume upon graduation day.

But yeah, us old guys had it just sooooo easy back in the day...

You guys absolutely had it easier. The only ppl I know with property without student debt now are in the top 10% of family income. **** gonna hit the fan if we keep that up. Those ppl I knew who graduated with useless degrees (aka. majority not STEM) paid $50,000 for a degree to work at Starbucks.

Also, even in my field, you're only getting a job before coop (we had 1 term) if you're good (near perfect GPA); **** off if not. This literally removes 80% of the class. I was in the perfect GPA category btw so I am not whining about it.

.....at the same time, I see a lot of Instagram Influencers so.........??? lol

I dislike hiring by GPA. Many of the high GPA mutants are useless outside of an academic setting. A few are good, but in general, I'd rather have the ones with more balance in their lives.

This is really subjective and I can't comment outside of my program and field. Devs I've met that knew what they were doing generally performed really well in school. There are some exceptions but they usually fall into the "**** school, I'm too smart" category (without ego, they actually are smart af similar to someone labelled a genetic freak for physical prowess) which is an edge case lol

EDIT: George Hotz - Wikipedia This guy also comes to mind.....but again, genetic freak (in a good way.)

Think a degree is around $50k. Assume $70k due to inflation or whatever by the time they need it.

You guys are doing your kids some damn good service; I had to pay for that **** myself lol
I wonder. When the kids have to foot the bill they take it serious. When Mom and Pop are paying sometimes not so much.

If that looks like the plan they are likely to follow, they get the RESP money at the end of the year assuming they put in sufficient effort. Screw around and the bill is theirs. If it was possible to have them on OSAP watching the numbers grow and then use RESP to wipe the debt when they graduate, I would go that route but that is not possible with the current rules. Starting adulthood six figures in the hole really puts a damper on forward progress.

OSAP - We called it the Ontario Stereo Assistance Plan

You yuonguns can go goggle stereo.
A fellow student was on his second degree. OSAP bought him a beautiful Linn system. That system is better than anything I own 20 years later.

Eh this entire work your ass off doesn't work right now unless you mean work your ass off 80+ hours through OT or multiple jobs

UW Eng Degree is ~$ 16,000 x 4 years
Room Rental ~$ 1000/month x 48 months

blah blah
Tuition is up to 16 for eng? Cripes. Math adds up though. Low six figures for a degree living away from home.

I wanted to go to purdue and didn't bother applying as you had to show them accounts you were going to pillage for $250K USD prior them them bothering to review you application. That pool of money didn't exist so I stayed in Canada. Purdue is still awesome.

The deal we made with our kids was they were on the hook for their first year. If that goes well then we stepped in and paid for the remainder until RESP funds ran out. Our youngest is a last year nursing student and will also be debt free.

Not a bad plan but if things go as expected I need to get as much money out of RESP as fast as possible. Maybe first year comes out of RESP and they transfer it into a holding account they don't have access to.

You could do that. The rules are pretty lose. Just remember to withdraw the grant portion when the student has low or no income. If they have income and the grant portion gets withdrawn the same year, it gets taxed back. You get to chose what portion gets withdrawn and when, so plan wisely . Not everyone knows this.

We will cover tuition only. We live in Toronto and there are plenty of schools here that cover pretty much all possible courses, they can live at home. If they want to go away, they need to pay to live or get a scholarship and then the tuition money can go towards living expenses. Kids will also be working at 16 to have some skin in the game.

For me I paid for everything but lived at home. Had to go to college the first round as there was not enough money for university. Went back to school full time while working full time to get my degree later on.

The way it looks so far, I will pull the money I put in around the time they start school, the government grabs their 7200 back at the same time, the kid then tries to pull out as much of the growth as legally possible every year. If I can keep returns up (obviously a big if), the growth will vastly exceed what they can legally/supportable draw.
