Stealerships Stories... Got one?

I once had a sales guy tell me he COULDN'T take my offer to his manager, it was TOO low and it would make him LOOK bad to his manager.
So I offered to take the offer in myself.
I got the truck for MY price, about 75% of the ask.
My friends used to get me to do the deal when they bought cars. I LIKE dealing with car salesmen. Is FUN.
When I go in to buy a car from a dealer, I know what I want to pay. When the sales rep pulls out the sales agreement I ask him to let me read it after he fills in the car details.

Before we negotiate, I write in my first snd final offer on the bottom line, sign the deal and tell him to work out the rest.

Kennedy Ford here in Oakville had gone the store model not dealership , the cars are priced at “fair “ sale and you pay the price on the sign , it’s not a game . I sort of like that.
I’ll usually ask the salesman if I’m serious about a vehicle , what offer do you feel gets this done ? I have no idea how far up or down things will go so I let them tell me , if it’s an amount I think I’m comfortable with , I buy a car .
They have a pattern they use , I’m fine with the must ask manager game , I know it going in.
Worst buying experience ever was Milton Honda , ( owned by the Leggat group) , the sales manager was a complete dick with my daughter.

I try and be fair but I also know what my car is worth approximately as I typically use a trade in.

I know the GTI market is volatile but right now it’s about 24-26k wholesale and retail is 30-32. Anything under that is with an accident record at 29-30k.

I want to sell the GTI private but so many idiots I don’t want to bother. So I’ll shoot dor 25k trade price or 30k privately.

I don’t care how they make the numbers work, but I know it’s a game and I go in prepared to kill 2-3hrs to get a deal on a car I want.

The year was 2010 and I was shopping for a new F150.
I see an ad in the Toronto Sun from a big Mississauga Ford dealer advertising trucks that fit my want at a price I recall thinking was too good to be true.
I call and ask "what's the catch?"
"No catch sir... the price is as advertised plus tax"
"So you're telling me if I come in tomorrow and try to buy that truck... that's the price?"
"Yessir".

"What's your name again?"

"Bob"

"See you tomorrow Bob"

Fast fwd 12 years and I go back to the same dealership looking for another new F150.

After 20 minutes of ******** and hucksterism I walked out.

The car business is completely different. When I was in it early 2000s it was still run and operated by car guys. We had fun, made money, and enjoyed the wheeling and dealings.

Then the accountants and controllers came in. Car guys were replaced by accountants, business managers came in and upsold junk warranties and trinkets because the margins were larger on those than the cars.

Then service pricing cracked $100/hr shortly thereafter.

The business changed and everyone I still talk to said the same thing ‘you got out at the right time, it’s all dollars and cents now’.

I hate dealing with randos too. I prefer giving/selling to friends at a very generous discount, or I trade it in and bite the bullet and take a small hit for the convenience of not having to negotiate with dolts.

$25K trade-in is equal to $28.25K with the tax benefit. IMO, it's worth the $1750 not to have to deal with kijijidiots.

I agree with your logic, your math confuses me.

If private exceeds dealer by more than ~5K, I sell privately, if it's less than that, I'll take the easy road.

Assuming buying when selling at the dealer.

I think the idea is if the private sale is 13% higher than the dealer will pay that is break even money wise (HST savings on the new car). Then figure out how much your time and hassle is worth to get how much more than that you need to get private sale.

Having worked at a dealership, I would 100% avoid their service departments. The service advisors are paid a measly hourly wage and expected to upsell/scam for commision, something I don't have the conscience for. I worked in parts and it always hurt my soul when a salesperson came in asking for the rust module, expensive snake oil in my opinion.

Some things we'll fix in our driveways, but the rest I take my car to a small shop in town. An oil change there is abou $80, cheaper and less hassle than getting the stuff from CT and they never try to upsell me. They have their own car racing team, so that makes me trust them a little more.

I’m also in the camp of avoid the Kijijidiots. I’m not happy eating the two or three k difference that sometimes occurs , but geez , some of the dolts are hard to get past.
I have sold a couple bikes to GTAM members and other things and my experience there has been very good .

Selling off a bike , ( non GTAM guy ) booked a come look appointment. He gets there , I took a morning off work since he was a shift worker . He didn’t want a bike , he just liked looking and talking to guys about bikes . I recommended he get a cat .

Did I math wrongly?

$25K with 13% ontario tax = $28.25K

$30K - $28.25K = $1750

Where did I go wrong? Maybe not enough sleep last night...
Nah you didn't do anything wrong.

I'm hoping to get 25k as a trade = 28.25k as a trade-in credit.

I'm shooting for 30k as a private sale, but so long as I sell for above 28.25k ... I'm ahead with selling privately.

In all honesty, I'll just use it as a trade though...

If I wasn't so undecided (stupid awesome sexy GTI) then this would have been done already.

Can't remember who made up a thread about my indecisiveness. GTI is such a fun / awesome car. Wish I could keep it and live the baller life, and then just buy a diff commuter while keeping the GTI.

Yes electronic rust protect for a vehicle is a total scam.

The device requires the circuit to be completed which really only happens when the car is more or less submerged. The concept works on ships and even buried pipelines as they are for all practical purposes submerged in a conductive solution and the circuit is completed. Some of the marketing heavily relies on the "look at industrial applications..."

To be fair, how many people working at the dealer understand the science and even know what an anode and a cathode are?

Srsly.

If your opening offer starts out with 50% off my already-low asking price, then your message automatically gets booted to the trash can with no response.

Had a guy who regretted low-balling me and repeatedly messaged me after, raising his price higher and higher till he eventually reached my asking price.

I still said no because he was such an idiot.

He later sent another message from his girlfriend's account. I only knew this because of his atrocious spelling.

I also said no to his sock puppet email account.

So satisfying.

I did sell for my asking price to somebody else. Who wasn't an idiot.

From a profitability perspective, it's probably better if they don't. When people truly believe, it's easier to convince others to get on the crazy train.

The interesting question for me is who is making bank? Is a snake-oil salesman selling a blinking LED to the dealers for $500 to be marked up to $2000? Are the dealers buying them from aliexpress for $5 to be marked up to $2000? Is the dealer using another controlled company to sell them into the dealer at $1500 so the dealer books don't look scummy and that allows transfer of money out? Easy way to have your adult kid get a cut with minimal tax.

The sad thing is: if the car/truck was designed with a anode(s) in mind, and the car was originally built with galvanic corrosion protection they would work. You CAN rust proof metal
So who is "scamming" us?
Can you bolt something on AFTER the car is built that will work... NO
I got a box of them. If you're buying a new car you can have one for postage.
