I recently got a quote from State Farm on a bike I am going to buy and they wrote this:
"If you would like to go ahead, please note that we do insurance motorcycles on an accommodating basis. Which means that we would have to insure your car or renters in order to insure the bike as we need to off-set the risk. Bikes are very risky and as an insurance company we need to accommodate for the risk appropriately."

You gotta be kidding me. They just lost my business.

They also take 40% of your bike insurance when you bring them a car.

Who do I report them to?

i would go through the main state farm number. its probably a 1 800 number. just be sure to have the agents name on hand (obviously)

I'm with State Farm & insured only the bike. I chose to bundle the house & truck as well for the savings 6 months later when they came due.

Side note: My house was damaged by a storm & State Farm was easy to deal with & I had over $15K in damage.

I emailed them back telling them what you guys said about that being wrong and reporting them and I just got a phone call from the agent herself claiming that what was written by email was wrong and of course they will insure me.

Minior hijack:

Any of you know SF's categorization for minor / major speeding tickets? Are they one of those insurance companies that class 30kph+ as a major, or just 49kph+ as a major?

Who was the agent? And was it an automated e-mail or not?

State Farm gave me the highest quote. That was with my car and homeowners included. I ended up going with Johnson Inc. for car and home and Primmum for the bike. Saved about $2,000/year that way.

My first bike was a 250 so SF was super cheap (600 a year) they told me I had to have life insurance otherwise they would not insure me it was still cheaper as the Life insurance was like 25 extra a month. after joining this forum and being told that they cant do that and confirming with another SF agent. I called their complaints dept. I then got a call saying i could cancel my life and not risk loosing my MC insurance. I said great but i want a refund of the full premium that I did not want in the first place they umed are ahhhed.I said fine i will go to the ombudsman. Next morning at 6:00am i got a phone call saying they had refund my premium and a check was in the mail. I got about 100 bucks back.

Seems like certain SF agents try this on all the time. I would forward a copy of the original email to their ombudsman

I keep trying to find an ombudsman/complaint person but can't. I searched the web-site and all. Does anyone know?

Report the agent to FSCO. Tied selling is illegal in Ontario.

Yes and no. This comes up from time to time and while its true its illegal for banks and other financials, insurance companies are in this weird legal grey area in tied selling (unless they are also a bank). But its still illegal because statefarm don't have it as part of their insurance mandate as a requirement. of insurance (Paraphrasing viper here .. probably incorrectly.)
