Dresden showed a great pic of salty roads. It's not just gravel-like rock salt bits; it's the pulverized, talcum-powder like stuff and the precipitate that remains when water evaporates. That powdery stuff will get everywhere in your bike and it can reduce traction.
If you see a pile of snow at the side of the road and there's melt-water running out of it you can be sure that water is loaded with dissolved salts. Roads are salted and sanded, snow falls and plows and snowblowers go to work piling it up. When it melts, the salt dissolves in it and runs off with the water.
Some people don't mind spraying their bikes with that stuff. I'd rather just wait until it's basically gone and a few fresh rains have washed the remaining junk away.

That's what I'm hoping...although with lows some days dipping down to 1-2C, there is always the chance they'll throw down salt/brine again (especially given there is likely a surplus after this winter).
There was some talk last night about a trip up to Port Perry today with a few friends. Not sure if that'll happen, not looking particularly warm today in the forecast, although nice and sunny and calm winds all day it seems.

Ended up going all the way to Bowmanville and back to visit a fellow rider. Meh, first 25K for March in the books. Came home and did an oil change (first since I've owned the bike), had a few buttpucker moments waiting for the oil pressure light to go out afterwards after restarting, apparently the VTX takes quite a while to fill a new oil filter.
Make life easier on your engine: prime the filter with fresh oil before installing it. Pour oil in, then wait as it is absorbed into the media. Repeat until no more oil is absorbed (i.e. the filter actually fills.) Wet the O-ring gasket and spin it on. You'll have virtually instant oil pressure and your bearings will thank you.
I always do, but on the VTX the filter is sideways so there's only so much you can get in any horizontally mounted before it all just runs out when you're installing the filter and makes a huge mess. I much prefer it when vehicles have vertically mounted filters and you can literally fill them up before installing, but horizontally mounted, well, we're talking a handful of millilters the media will absorb (nowhere close to enough for a quick prime) so you've got to deal with the prime afterwards and stare at that scary red light until it goes out. It was probably only 3 or 4 seconds, but it always feels like an eternity on any vehicle.
The coming rain on Tues/Wed/Thurs should take care of the remaining salt on the roads.. Monster will come out shortly after - but definitely head home before sunsets. Had a few early rides last season and during the day it's brilliant.. but when the sun goes down the reality of cold sets in haha.
Yep. Haven't really rode any distance on it to come up with any observations yet however, assuming I notice any difference at all.

I noticed my shadow 1100 shifted smoother and felt less clunky on shifting when I switched to Rotella. It also seemed quieter, less overall mechanical noise. I was running the T non synthetic 15w40.
