Sportrack vs thule vs yakima

I think I found a piece within a reasonable distance, for a good price, but is missing a key...

With the help of a good GTAMer, and some google hopefully we can open it up and a key assembly is fairly cheap.

Will see later today.
If it's a Thule or Yakima you can get the key online from them. There should be a code on the lock that identifies which key is needed. That's how I got an extra key for the Thule that I had previously. I think you can also get replacement keys through Rack Attack.

My current Mont Blanc box is European and there are no dealers here, so when I wanted an additional key I had to order from EasyKeys online.

Good tip thanks! I actually have a Yakima key as my current box (the damaged / repaired one) is a Yakima...but I don't expect to be able to use the same key.

But good tip because now I can get a second key for my Yakima.

Now...need some stickers for them! Anybody got bumper stickers from the East Coast? That box has seen all of those provinces.

As most (all?) of these racks/boxes just use crap wafer cylinders, you can pop the clip off the back and replace with a new cylinder you have keys for. For instance, most of us have toolboxes with the same cylinder than we never lock. Swapping to that cylinder probably works and is free.

Screaming heads is all you need.

Hmmm...that means I can buy new cylinders and replace all the YAKIMA boxes I have...

It looks like you have this solved but I found that a lot of Thule products have 3-5 months interest free payments on them from Amazon which takes the sting out the price a little. Not the same with Yakima. Reason I know this is through looking for a hitch bike rack.

Thule is def at the top of the list…but the price point is huge.

I’ve had issues with people outright lying about the condition, to 100% scam of ‘send me $50 so I’ll hold it for you’ even though I said I was on the way.

Lots of others would just ghost and say someone else is picking up meanwhile it’s stayed available for weeks on end.

And I’m not going to drop $700-1000 on a piece that I use once per year.

Resale seems reasonably solid which is why I’m looking at new. Eye watering prices for some things but pretty rock solid products.

Well...looks like I'm still looking. Not only is the YAKIMA missing the key, there's a crack that wasn't disclosed.

FAK.

Shows $109 per month interest free for 5 months for me. About $500ish.
I've got a small one about that size. I want/need the 15-17ft3 range.

I'll keep looking...there's always a new one popping up. SportRack is also an option as they're owned by THULE.

Prime example...

- no click system for tightening
- damaged lock
- missing rivet

$450

Yup. I browsed some bike racks on marketplace and kijiji and saw the same thing. Hence the decision to go with new, with a warranty and zero interest. Amazon 0% financing is easy if it’s offered on checkout. I only do the 0% stuff not the ridiculous bajillion % interest options they usually have.

I've got one or two more leads and then may just go that route. Other option is to just pack less stuff...and will reach out to my neighbour as he's got 3...maybe he'll let one go.

Wow!!! No mounting hardware and asking $450! Have you seen the price of that hardware? I wouldn't offer more than $100 for that box. The mounting hardware alone is probably north of $150 and the damaged lock could also prove to be fun/costly to replace. I think that guy will have that box for sale for a long time. Everyone has such an inflated idea of the value of these things.

Good luck on your hunt.

In some weird twist of faith I ended up buying 2 Yakima boxes for less than $300….

This one is in great shape…$200

Other one is missing a key and has a crack which needs fixing for $80…but a helpful GTAMer already for it opened up and a crack I know how to fix.

Now I have 3 different sized YAKIMAs…might have to sell one lol.
