Neighbour did say he can fix it with some epoxy and fiberglass.

Scratches on hood don’t appear deep and he also said he should be able to buff out 90% or more of it.

Guess I’ll be learning a new skill…

My buddy (a guy) Did a similar thing with his brand new Thule box. $1200. Used maybe twice.

He ended up repairing it himself with a fiber-cloth kit from crappy tire.

If you need to borrow one in the meantime, let me know. I have one. As long as you are driving.

Also if you need a body shop to fix up the car let me know.

Be careful with cheap ones like rack attack. They are good, however it’s hard to put accessories like the J bars on them. At least the rack I have. It is thicker on on side, which looks sweet and cuts down on noise but a real pain in the ass to attach anything to and keep tight

That's pretty much how all roof boxes end up damaged. Either that or those overhead height limiting bars they put over the entrances to some outdoor parking lots to keep out large trucks. When I had my Tribute with a Thule ski box I was always on the look-out for clearance issues, but wasn't thinking one day and had a slight contact. Luckily only scratches, no cracks or breaks in the top cover.

I now drive a CX-3 which is not as tall, so it fits inside my garage with my current Mont Blanc ski box attached. This is great because I have a pulley system (actually a bike lift), which I use to lift the box off the car when not in use.

IF I get this top box fixed it’ll be the GTI roof box as I don’t need pretty, just functional.

Neighbour is offering his top box ‘as long as you’re driving to the camp site and not your wife’ lol

We joked. She got upset. But in the end all is good…

Just waiting on the condo property manager to send me the bill for the repair…

They say the aluminum bottom has been replaced countless times due to previous hits…I’m just hoping it’s sub $500.

When I had the cycling racks on the top of my car this was always a worry for me, never happened. Luckily you also don't leave the bikes up there all the time...

Was the box in use at the time, if not how hard are they to add and remove to only be there when in use (like going camping, on a trip, not into condos)? It does not totally prevent damage but removing it when not in use should reduce the day to day likelihood.

Of course... if the GTI was an automatic (yuck ): ) maybe she would have been driving it...

My wife hit the top of our van at the airport a week or two ago on the overhead sign haven't climbed up that high to see what damage she did to the fiberglass yet. I did tell her I found some footage of her at the airport and sent her this video.https://youtu.be/-rcz5Ew1lWU?si=iqLorBCz7ErVpHfq

My neighbour said his wife did the same thing mine did. Except in her case, it was 2 bicycles on the roof, and she ended up taking down an emergency fire sprinkler system at a Loblaws parking lot...

So...I'm still waiting for the quote...fingers crossed it's less than $500.

Most of them aren't too hard to remove but especially on a van, it's awkward. They aren't light, they are an awkward size and the van is tall. Malks system where you lift it straight up is the best if you can do it.

I don't have bikes on my roof often but a huge fear is crashing them into something. So much damage and money down the drain caused by a few seconds of inattention. Friends of friends destroyed two bikes, a rack and their garage door returning home at the end of a long trip.

Only reason it was up there was because I didn’t feel like taking it off and I warned her about that condo as it’s her only client in a condo…she just thought it would fit…when she backed up is when all the damage happened.

Not difficult to put on or off, just a pain due to the height.

I’m working on a repair plan for it, but if it doesn’t work out that box served its purpose for many years.

Here it is in 2015 of an East Coast road trip…

That's actually pretty awesome! I love it. I actually have one of those bike lifts laying around here somewhere! Time to go searching.

Although I wish I had a taller garage as that won't fly in my place...but in the shed it will fit nicely.
 
I fixed a bunch of top boxes with g-flex epoxy. My understanding is the CT stuff isn't really epoxy it's polyester resin. If you look you can find the g-flex cheaper at marine stores. G-flex has a longer working time than that CT stuff. Many older Thule boxes cracked where the mounting mechanism was riveted. Mine has 10 years on my repair and I bounce it all over offroading.

I am looking to install a whip antenna on the hood that marks my car height. Most of the new parking lots are built to liberal 15 minute city standards.
 
I needed crossbars to get the windsurfers home. The plan is for to use them only occasionally so I bought cheap amazon ones. They are solid but the noise/whistle is crazy.

I have a yakima rack with towers from years ago but it had an issue with bolts to adjust width (made of chinesium and riveted into assembly). I didn't feel like dealing with that and buying new pads for the towers (if they are even available) would cost almost as much as the amazon bars.

I hear you. Everything is either way overpriced, or damaged, or missing the mounting hardware, or have no key. I looked for months until I found the one in the pics above. I had the same experience, but had the additional problem that I was looking for a shorter (in length) box that would still fit my 171 cm skis. Most ski boxes are much too long and would look huge on my small CX3.

The one I finally found was right here in Orangeville and they only wanted $120. It had the mounting hardware and a key, but the gas struts were shot. These are needed to help lift the lid and keep it open when loading my skis into it. I bought a set of cabinet hardware lifts at Home Depot and they were the perfect size and work great.

I think I found a piece within a reasonable distance, for a good price, but is missing a key...

With the help of a good GTAMer, and some google hopefully we can open it up and a key assembly is fairly cheap.

Will see later today.
