Sport tourer for an old fart?

It's been 30 years since I've ridden a sport bike. I'm toying with the idea of getting on 2 wheels again but prefer a bike with a more upright riding position. So far my short list includes Ninja 650 R, GSX 650 F or maybe a Honda VFR.

Any other bike suggestions or opinions are greatly appreciated.

I've got a Suzuki Gladius SFV650; it's a nice combo of sport/standard bike with the torque of the SV motor! Get an M4 exhaust they're make the v-twin sound even better!

You'd be shocked at this in the twisties.....this review is accurate....

I was in the same position - coming from a drop bars RD400 a couple decades back.....don't miss it in the least....
.and it's a terrific tourer....just did the James Bay Road - 104 litres storage with the top case.

at north of 150+ at times.... ask the riders here - they've ridden just about everything going

VFR is sweet tho.......if I was considering a bigger sport tourer I'd get the auto version of that. but $$$ :(

I've owned the GSX650F. Really sweet bike and I would've kept it if I could afford to keep two bikes. Nice riding position as well and a decent powerband, if you ever need it. I've heard good things too about it's big brother with the 1250 motor. Even a bandit is a sweet option. Depending on whether you really enjoy riding an auto vs a manual you might even consider MacDocs suggestion.

A word of advice...check what forums have to say about the seats on the bikes if you want to go long distances....mine was a ****ing pain in the literal *** until I got an airhawk cushion. I don't mind doing aftermarket fixes but would be happier if the OEM seat was a bit more forgiving.

I have a Z750S by the way and have a Givi topcase and soft sidebags on it and it does me good for long distances with a nice upright riding position and touring windshield (laminar lip).

litre V-Storm would be on my look see list. FZ-1 with luggage. VFR as mentioned. Buell Ulysses has an outside chance for the right price.

Isn't Honda making a CBF...something as well? Might be an option.

I've seen it and the ones on your list look better, but might be worth checking out. Good luck.

I was 19yr out of the bike scene.Came back two seasons ago, bought a Triumph Sprint ST.It'sgreat bike for touring and hitting the twisties :)

You don't say if you are looking at new or used. Used I would look at a first gen FZ1 and get a sargent seat for it.

Bandit 1200 or the new GSX 1250

I've got just over 40,000 kms on my bandit 1250 with nothing bad to say about it at all. I'm looking for an excus and I've been wanting a new bike but just can't find a suitable replacement that does everything my bike does in that price range. If you got the funds I'd be looking at a RT1200 ;)

I'm a sport touring old fart myself, my 2 favorite at the moment are (used, I refuse to buy new) the venerable BMW K75/100, excellent examples can be had in the $3,000 range and the Yamaha FJ 1100/1200, $2,500 range. Time tested.

depends on what you want...if you want big motor you can't go wrong with a bandit...bullet proof engines and not to mention they are cheap on insurance and to own. No one ever steals one either!

If you want something more of a "symphony" when revving it, go with the fz1 or cbf1000. again you can always get the respective 600 versions of the above (fz6, cbf600, bandit 600) instead if litre bikes are too powerful for ya

Honda ST1100 or 1300. Reliable as a rock, just add gas and go 450+kms per tank. Maintenance consists of oil changes every 5000km or so and new tires once a year. Once I replaced the saddle with a used Corbin mine is comfortable for 800km days.

Honda makes a CB600F that is nice too. Very upright, but still a little sporty and you can get factory hard luggage. Comes with a centre stand to make lubing the chain an easy affair.
