Spark plug change interval

So in short, thats the reason I asked if you did the sample collection properly.

Like most people who go through the bother of sending in sample, I read/followed the procedures outlined by the lab.... Like I said before, 6K OCI is the limit I am comfortable with for my bike under my riding conditions.

Spark plug Question and upcoming cold weather.

According to the my owners manual it says if you do alot of high speed riding it says to use an optional plug NR9E. The standard plug is NR8E. The NR9E is a colder running plug. What I figure is because the temps are dropping you actually need a hotter running plug which will be the standard plug. Next spring when the temps start to rise switch back to the NR9E plug. Any thoughts?

You can gauge by the appearance of the plugs. If its dry & white, its burning hot. If its brown/dark, its probably cold

Re: Spark plug Question and upcoming cold weather.

Make SURE you observe and replace the spark plug leads in their correct firing order; otherwise loud popping may occur. I made this mistake while wrenching on mine. Label them when you pull them out eg: inside and outside. Also make sure the spark plug socket is clean of any debris BEFORE you remove your plugs. Otherwise you could end up destroying a cylinder.

Damn, how did u confuse the leads?? Thats not good.

U can clean the sockets by spraying a bit of compressed air

Re: Spark plug Question and upcoming cold weather.

@RockerGuy

It was all good. I quickly shut the bike off with the kill switch and reversed the plug leads. Bike was fine. Scared the crap outta me at first !!

Re: Spark plug Question and upcoming cold weather.

Just a quick tip, u can wrap electrical tape around it and take a sharpie and label it. My bike has the leads with just enough length so u don't mess it up

The OEMs are under constant pressure to make cost of ownership appear as low as possible and in my experience, the service intervals tend to be longer than what Im comfortable with. Case in point: yamaha specs oil changes at 6k Km's and oil filters every 12k - which I consider to be far too long based on oil analysis I have had done. For the use my bike sees, its worth spending 30 bucks and swapping out the plugs each year.

if you think that's long, suzuki's owner manual for the hayabusa states that the filter only needs to be replaced every 18,000km, or every 3 years! Now THAT seems like stretching it!

Alot of ppl don't realize when a filter has done more filtering, it becomes more efficient. Meaning, only smaller particles are able to get thru. However, this comes at a cost, there is less flow thru the filter.

Suzuki filters have a higher bypass pressure. Meaning the filter has to have a lot of crud blocking it before the bypass valve is opened.

My filters are recommended for 12k, I replace them at 10k

+1 Excessively replacing oil and air filters is worse for your engine, not better. However, wait too long and the filter itself will detoriate - then you potentially get filter media stuck in the oil passages, which is Not Good.

Wear numbers are fine but the viscosity at 100c starts to break down quite a bit (rotella T synth). Who did the testing for your oil and what did the numbers look like at 10k?

Here are the results for my Rotella T at 10k kms.

UPDATE: Just in case this is useful info for anyone.

I just got my bike back, valves adjusted, sprockets and chain installed, new rear suspension swapped in and all four plugs changed for NGK irridiums. Cost me $580 total including taxes and parts (I provided the sprockets and suspension pieces) which I thought was actually a pretty good deal.

The plugs were black and one was starting to show signs of corrosion so I'm glad I did this. I'm going to get the bike dynoed when I can to make sure the air/fuel mixture and ignition are spot on (I have a PCIII installed already) in case that's affecting the plug lifetime.

For the plugs. $40 bucks if I am doing it myself, $200 in the store. Takes what...? 1-2 hours of my time.

spark plugs are used as a tool to read the burn in each cylinder. with the clean gas of to day, spark plugs dont carbon up like they use to. no lead or sulfer. manufactures want to sell oem parts through their dealers with the service of the bike. i believe thats it over rated to change out the plugs on their intervales, if the bike is kept in tune the spark plugs should last over 50ks or more.

Mabey even less time...I just changed out my plugs tonight on my 929rr the regular ngk's had 40,000km on them so thought it was time, so i put in some iridiums and it took my about 50 minutes to do my plugs and it was a ***** as the frame is pretty close so not much room....while i had everything open i replaced the thermostat and adjusted the manual CCT as it was ticking after 40,000km.....

Depends on the bike ......ZX6R 30-40 min max, 07+ 600RR 2 hours or more with how stupid it is to get to them on those bikes

Wow... reading what some people here are saying they pay for a spark plug change (or how long it takes them to do) makes me really glad to have a GS500... changing the spark plugs costs maybe 8$ and takes 2 minutes tops - maybe 5 if I forgot where I left my spark plug wrench and have to go find it.

Yeah getting to the plugs on some in line 4 sport bikes is a pain in the ***, 1 hour to get to them 5 min to change them, then another 1 hour to put everything back...I think thats why Honda uses NGK lasers with athe longer life span, cause they sure as hell didnt make them easy to get too!

Yeah! Those 600RR are a pain to get into! I thought the 05/06 636's cycl #1 was bad until I had to get into these 600RR plugs. Plus weird honda plugs with their shoulders!!

Maybe thats why the new SS bikes come with iridium's stock!!?
