Sony Action Cam!

The best part about the JVC is the Screen on the side of it. No other action cam comes with that at this price point.

Why would you get the JVC one when you can get the the DriftHD? The DriftHD has everything (except wifi) that the JVC one has plus a rotating lens, waterproof RF remote and very cheap batteries on ebay. Also the DriftHD is the 4th generation in the line of Drift cameras. Much better than a first generation.

Can you power it by the bikes battery/12v and have it record AT THE SAME TIME?

Also, does it have the threaded tripod hole thing on the bottom?

If it can do those two things right out of the box, I'm ordering it.

That would be great. I need that feature :)

Checked last night and nope cannot power it directly while recording. Well you might be able to modify it but the reason is all the plugs are hidden behind the water proof door that protects them and the battery. Fault number one I guess. I wish a company would just comeout with a camera that had all the positives combined till then i'm stuck with my three different ones.

Considering JVC was one of the pioneers in home video recording I wouldn't be to worried about a first gen product. Also JVC quoted the replacement batteries at $34.95+tax CAD. That seems pretty reasonable to me.

You're comparing camcorders to Action Cams? Not even close to being the same thing.

Also... $34.95+tax is a lot more then $2 for a battery

The DriftHD can do both plus external mic (if you need that)

Hmmmmmm. DriftHD it is I guess! External mic is good too, as I have some crazy quality mics I'd like to try on the bike. I'm a big audio guy, and GoPro just doesn't do it for me :(

EDIT: Where does it say the drift HD can be powered by external power? I assume it gets power from USB? Are you sure it can record and power/charge by USB at the same time?? :(

I'm 99% sure since I can do it with my DriftHD170 (the model before this one). While the USB cable is plugged in I can turn it on and record. The only problem with the older model is that you had to leave the back door open but with this new one they have weather proof ports in the back.

You might want to confirm with a forum or the company itself though.

They're all still behind the GoPro in terms of the one and most important thing: Mounts.

The JVC is nice, in that it offers the standard 1/4-20 threaded camera mount, so users can fabricate custom stuff (an area where the GoPro lacks, BUT a camera mount base is like $7). What they need to do is offer people factory mounts: chest mount, sticky mounts, bar mounts, clamp mounts, etc.

Without a way to mount these things, all you're gonna be looking at are Blair Witch action videos, imo.

With a little-trial and error, aiming isn't all that difficult. That being said, I have lost a day's worth of vids to bad aiming before.

RAM 1" balls and various sizes of arms to a 1/4" tripod male adapter and you can mount anything anywhere.
RAM mounts are genius

Lots of good options here. I am also in the market for a camera. So far the JVC is at the top of my list.

- built in LCD viewer ( easier is aim the camera)
- uses a SDHC card
- Lithion Ion Battery
- 5 mxp still shots
- HDMI out
- WIFI built in
- no external water proof case required
- optional mounts comming soon (e.g. tank suction mount) or just do as above (RAM ball suction mount with tripod adapter)
- video quality seems to be the same as the others
- average cost between Sony and Contour (same as GO PRO 2)
