Someone Give This Cop A Medal!!!

This makes me sick.

When I was in my 20's, I worked in a bar in CabbageTown. One night we had a Johnny Cash impersonator, who's dayjob was a uniform with the 52 division.

We had about a dozen off duty cops in the place, which doesn't sound bad, but they were all completely wasted. One cop kept going into the bathroom with his drink to scream at his wife on his cell phone. This wouldn't have been a problem, except that there were no drinks permitted in the washrooms (liquor license). When the bouncer tried to reason with him for the 5th or 6th time, the cop continued to ignore him.. so he grabbed the guys beer off the counter and brought it back out into the licensed area, and put it on a ledge near the washroom. He also stood there so no one would mess with the guys drink.

A couple minutes later the cop comes out of the washroom, done screaming at his wife now, and jumps the bouncer. Fists flying, the cops dogpile the bouncer and he gets pretty messed up before they finally all get off of him. Then they proceed to intimidate the manager before sending the guy who jumped the bouncer on his way. He was soo drunk he was slurring and couldn't walk straight. A couple of them walked him to his F250, which he hopped into and drove away. Presumably to head home and continue his argument with his wife in person.

These are the people we are supposed to trust and expect protection from?

If only you guys knew how many times a drunk cop gets pulled over, and his buddies get him home without charges being laid... or worse, causes an accident while drunk and magically goes home and drinks 5 drinks "to steady his nerves" before the police "catch up with him."

Just after I moved to Canada I was invited to a dinner party where a Peel Region cop was also invited. He was bragging about speeding whenever he wanted and drink driving on occasions and just flashing his badge if he got pulled. I ripped into him, which was a bit embarrasing for the hosts, and told him what a **** he was. I've been to a couple of social occasions since the where he's present and he stays out my way. Funnily enough I will be seeing him on Saturday. It'd be great if I saw him drinking and the driving. I'd grass him in a heartbeat.

There is an old school culture in the Police, just like I used to see in the UK. It takes young brave officers to change the mentality. But it will take time.

That cop bar is BS.
Used an example of an officer's mess... Yeah, a building totally on it's own from other buildings and is a designated building for what it is used for. Banquets, meetings, meals, social events and a couple drinks AFTER WORK. A cab service from the town is also usually available. Totally different than if we had an "officers only" pub in the building I work in...

lol blue line...what a joke.

didnt he get like 10 days without pay??? wtf is wrong with that statement!!

what do i get for being in that situ?

what do we all get for driving/riding 50+ over?

I understand the blue line more from 20-30 years ago, when cops actually had common sense and discretion. pat on the head and "make sure you get home safe son"

As opposed to what happens now a days...

discretion for them = discretion for us.

otherwise the blue line shouldnt exist...**** this society

like the titanic, its all going down people! ;)

todays topics that boiled my blood, which all point to a systemic failure of society as a whole:

- blue line cop story
- the emergency vehicle death thing
- children and their lack of activity bla bla bla
- the montreal riots

Not to mention the officers using this mess hall don`t only work on base, many of them live there. So its perfectly reasonable for there to be a bar in what is basicaly the town they live in (the base) Not nearly the same thing when you talk about cops having a bar in their office tower.. no one lives in that building. Its a place where people are working.. and specifically public employees working on our tax dollars. Do i care if there is a bar in a private law firm? Nope.. those people dont work for me.

I am pretty sure that one of the firms just below us in our building has a keg in their bar. I thought that was pretty funny.

the sad part is that he was just doing his job, and we are all up for giving him a medal (don't get me wrong, i think he deserves one too).

that's how screwed up the system is. they need to lead by example.

Friend of a friend became OPP... I went out drinking with them twice and that's all it took for me to know that hanging out with off duty cops is dangerous for your health and makes you sick to know that they're in a position of authority.*
The first time we went out, he got so inebriated he just walked up to a bouncer picked a fight out of thin air and after a short scuffle he finally submits the poor guy (who did not have the stereotypical dimensions of a bouncer) flashed his badge and told him to 'be careful who he decides to mess with'. Kid was bleeding from the mouth, eyes wide and panting and the copper laughs at him and walks away, back to our merry night as if nothing happened. Needless to say I left shortly after...*
The second time he showed up to where we were at a bar near where I lived at the time already plastered (he drove there). When we were leaving, my friend suggested they walk me home to 'sober' up before he drove home. The area had a lot of new developements, houses half built and some houses with families already living in them - he began kicking in doors 'like they taught him' and knocked over a port-a-potty onto someones lawn. I couldn't help myself and had to say something to which he got right up to my face (spit spraying distance) and screamed at me to STFU and seriously looked like he was going to throw a punch at my face, so much so that my friend had to intervene (I'm a girl, and I really thought he was going to hit me).*
Suffice to say I never saw him again and barely ever saw my friend after that incident.*
Had he hit me, what could my friend have done? Who would believe me or do anything about it? The cops? Would my buddy 'rat' out his highschool friend? Hanging out with off duty police officers is something I've decided is just risky business and my story isn't the only one I've heard. I have however met a lot of cops (sober ones or who drink A beer or TWO with friends) but authority and heavy drinking is just a formula for abuse of power and things being swept under the carpet.*
How there as been a bar in police headquarters for so long that even MADD didn't know about it boggles my mind...*

MADD is just an organization for making money these days. Don't kid yourself.

And yeah, Deuce. That's who cops are. The people on here that pretend like cops are heroes and straight-laced lawmen don't know what they are talking about. It's not the few, either... it's the majority.

People in general have an attitude of self importance. These ones carry guns and are the friends of the court.

However there are good ones, we just don't know which ones.

A friend's SIL was a cop, did the DUI a few times and his buddies drove him home a couple of times. Then they let him know the favours were over and he quit. Still not good enough for me.

There are some things that are cardinal rules. DUI is one. Once is one too many.

The only time we hear the SIU is involved is AFTER someone is dead.

MADD moved from a message of moderation, long ago, to one of prohibition. It didn't work in the 1930s and it won't work now.

I don't agree with your blanket statements about police. They should be given the benefit of the doubt but, when they breach public trust, they should be slapped down heavily. For example I think that James Little should have lost his job, not just a few thousand dollars. He showed a particular lack of the proper mindset, to be a police officer.

I was contemplating joining the Police Force because I wanted to work in the ordnance disposal unit. The guys at the info sessions and all were great guys and you could tell they were good cops (probably hence why they were put in that position to begin with).

Sadly it really was the whole atmosphere and "camaraderie" which put me off, knowing that despite they promote diversity and all that on a higher level..well that doesn't translate to the lower echelons all that well. It's sad to see good people trying to make a difference in a diseased place, or good people who get infected because of the culture (or in this case reprimanded).

On a totally unrelated aside, y'all should watch 'The Wire'.

i would love to have a bar in my office, right now i just have a beer fridge in my server room...is it just me, or am i the only one here ok with the popo having a bar for the senior officers...albeit, this does not look good on their behalf when they are pushing the whole drinking and driving issues...

you hear the right rhetoric coming out of the police services and all of those involved, but you really have to question whether they have the commitment to actually clean house.

i know plenty of good cops, but i also know of some who have crossed the line without a hint of remorse or guilt.

the g20 charges that are coming down clearly show that it's significant problem. . .

i think we as a society kind of roll our eyes and look the other way when cops run reds for no reason, speed for no reason, park wherever they like, talk on their cellphones while driving, etc., but i agree with you that the dui issue is a real slap in the face. . .it's a pretty galling double standard

I don't have a huge problem with it, as long as officers aren't drinking while on duty. I'm sure most people are assuming that they *are*, and that's where the public is getting worked up about this.

I'm much more disturbed about this current story and the rookie officer upholding the law. Generally I'm very supportive of law enforcement, but this kinda thing is completely unacceptable and disheartening. Sadly, I don't thinking anyone is terribly surprised that this type of culture exists amongst police officers.

It's understandable that strong bonds are formed working with people whom you count on to have your back and potentially save your life. But that should not extend so far as to cover up your so-called "brother's" illegal behaviour. I'm glad that the media got a hold of this and it's got people talking.

meh, i usually pop a beer once market closes, chill at my desk and catch up on some nerd work...drinking beer for lunch usually sedates me for the afternoon, so yeah, on the job it would be a no-no, especially for the popo where operating vehicles and firearms is involved...both articles a waste of time in my opinion...
