Some Service Ontario locations closing

The Ford government is closing an unspecified number of ServiceOntario locations, CityNews has learned.

The outlets, where Ontarians can do things like renew driver’s licences and health cards, will be replaced by kiosks inside some Staples Canada stores as part of a pilot project first announced last month.

While the government confirmed in a December 7 news release that ServiceOntario kiosks would open in select Staples Canada stores to “reduce the overall cost to deliver government services to the public,” it made no mention of the fact that a number of centres would be closing.

“Beginning in early 2024, Service Ontario is opening new centres in select Staples Canada stores with additional locations expected to open throughout the year,” officials said.

The government declined to say if a kiosk would open for every Service Ontario location that closes or if this pilot project could lead to further ServiceOntario location closures.

Sources tell CityNews that some of the soon-to-be-shuttered locations have been family businesses for decades and that owners were given just 70 days’ notice that their business was being closed.

A government spokesperson says affected employees will be given the first crack at a job in the new Staples Canada kiosks.

CityNews reached out to Staples Canada for a comment but has yet to receive a response.

The writing was on the wall when dealers were allowed to process their own sales. I know at least one SO is closing Jan 31.

They had mall kiosks a decade ago and pulled them out of service because of glitches . Maybe it will be better .

True, I can remember going to them to renew tags etc.
I guess what was old is new again...

The gov't of the day was instructing ministers to increase the size of the civil service as a way to disguise some staggering job losses in Ontario's manufacturing sector. Installing the kiosks cut the MTO payroll by about 500 clerks, and closing the kiosks added about the same number back as 'jobs created'.

Those kiosks were wildly successful, they had an approval rate greater than 90%. The security breaches (all four of them) were because users walked away from the machines without their cards. Happens at ATMs a thousand times a day across Ontario.

The Milton location when it was run by the Clements family was a grumpy mess , it’s never improved in 40yrs .

I hate to not feel bad for people losing their jobs, but yeah, given as how they only seem to staff Service Ontario locations with the most miserable people on the planet, meh.

Hard to believe that a certain segment of the population won't figure out a way to scam the system with these things in some fashion however.

Iirc the old kiosks was a pretty massive data breach, not just a few people who left their cards in the slot either.

On Main St.? I stopped in the door the last time I left that place and called them all (rhymes with) bunts. Miserable, egotistical witches, all of them.

If Staples was smart, they'd set up a check-in system that allows you to shop around while waiting for your turn. Nothing worse than standing in line with people with bad BO and no sense of personal space while waiting for the only open wicket to attend to you while all the others are chatting away with each other. Good riddance.

"Employees of impacted private services providers are also being provided opportunities to continue employment with Staples Canada,” the government spokesperson added."

Guess Staples will be looking to trim some fat as well once the new folks have been onboarded.

FWIW, ime, the most miserable SO employees are employed at government run stores. They are grossly overpaid for their level of education, training and performance so they have both golden handcuffs and a job that is almost impossible to be fired from. During covid, they locked the doors as they were "afraid for their safety" and collected full pay for many months while doing no work. Agency SO stores have staff just above minimum wage and ime they aren't much different than many other employees in retail jobs.

They're talking about traditional kiosks, not digital kiosks.

Interesting but that's not how I interpreted it.

What's the difference with a "kiosk" vs a full SO outlet? If they both need employees (and probably more than 1), whereabthebsavings?

Personally I'd rather a digital kiosk again, myself. I loved those things when they were around.
