Sold the R1 already! lol

So i bought a 2004 R1 about 3 or 4 weeks ago ( red) loved it and have wanted that year for a while and got a great deal, but with all that I could not stand the friggin heat on my crotch and legs!! That mutha got hot! Not even temp wise, it was normal, but because of the stock exhaust setup it would roast your crotch and inner calves!!
Took only 2 days to sell so that was good, but now I need to find a bike!
Gonna try and find a good priced 02/03 R1, i had that one before this one but dumped it.

I dont know how if you guys with the same R1 have this problem, but damn how do you do it!?
 
think you may have jumped the gun just a little bit there.. these issues are generally easly fixed by eliminating the catalytic converter, as in installing a full system.
 
No I know, I was thinking that after, maybe it was even plugged cuz it had 45,000 k on it, so that could have been it. I wasnt going to invest in a full system anyways though, I usually only keep my bikes for one season, so figured might as well get the most money out of it while i can for the k.

My friend has a 06 R1 and even with a full system, I find it cooks my legs when we wife swap. The 02-03 is a great generation for the street. It doesnt have nearly the top end as the newer models, but it has a nice meaty midrange and its gearing is more suitable for street duty. Trouble is gonna be find one that hasnt been ragged out. Im a bit biased in that I think the "liquid silver" 02-03 combo is one of the best looking bikes japan has ever put out :)
 
Its true man! I have never experienced such crotch heat( insert joke here) before in my life!! So ya, I have had the 02 and loved it! plus the 04 seemed to not be as torquey as my 02, i could power mt 02 up below 6 as with the 04 i had to get it up to 10.
Either way, its gone and I am going to check out a couple 03's this weekend( silver abnd black as well) lol, so hopefully one pans out and hasnt been ragged on.

I was out with a passenger and unintentionally lofted my 03's front end with throttle alone in 3rd gear at around 6k rpm hehehe. My bike is geared, piped, filter, v. stacks and my passenger weighs 110 lbs... so yeah, they are decently torquey!
 
I believe it! My 02 had some mods but was much more torquey then this 04. Im really hoping to snag one this weekend to get back out there!

yes exactly! i cant handle being in heat and riding!

I'm in the same boat with the heat with the 05 zx-6r...

I rode my friend's 05 R6 and it seemed fine.
 
I had an 05 636 as well and ya it was hot, but i found in general that bike ran hot temp wise. It was not nearly as hot as the 04 r1 i just sold, but ya still pretty hot! Sell it! lol
Ya because the r6 has the side exhaust, most undertail exhausts tend to roast you more, just all depends to how they run underneath.

hahahahaha! I dont know how you do it! I do alot of commuting on the 401 from ajax to sauga, so the heat was just waaay too much!

I punched out the honeycomb in the cat on my 04 r1, with a hammer and screwdriver and added termi cans. no heat issues at all.

ill take fi over carb any day
 
Ya like i said maybe the cat issue woulda helped, but i wasnt prepared to put pipes on the bike, wouldnt keep it more then a year so wouldnt dump that kinda coin on pipes.
I dont want carb either, 02/03 is injected!

The problem with the R1 is that Yamaha, in its wisdom, decided to install the catatytic converter right beside your right ankle and inside shim.....(vs other manufacturers who install the cat under the bike or inside the mufflers) plus you have the additional heat of the underseat mufflers (which look cool, however......heats the seat).
So you cook your leg and butt.
If you read road tests on the R1 since the mid 2000 (to present) you will see test riders describing the heat from riding a R1 as 'sadastic'.
When they do track riding (for 15 minute segements)....no one minds riding the R1 however when they take the same bikes on street testing.....NO ONE wants to ride the R1 due to the heat.

I drove an R1 that had the cat gutted and the mufflers replaced with carbon fiber mufflers and did not notice the heat.....however it drove like crap. The bikes are tuned to operate with the cat in place and taking out the cat throws the fuel injection tuning out of whack.
Further this bike had a power commander installed by the dealer.....supposedly tuned.....still did not run right. Power was off/ lots of on/off fuel injection action....making the bike jerky to drive.
Having ridden the same bike, stock......this mod'd bike was a total disappointment.
 
I too had to gut the cat on my 05 R1. I'm also wrapping the mid-pipe with exhaust wrap to reduce heat transfer to the shock...iIt was getting way too hot.
 
I swear its that year on all bikes. Even my 2004 CBR rr roasts my legs after 2 hours of riding.
