I avoided FaceBook for years until I needed to find a school friend. Then got hooked on FB Market Place recently flipping bikes to good profit.

Hated Twitter and X but just looked in on BlueSky Bluesky where the X refugees are migrating enmasse. Just visiting for the moment. 🍿

I still prefer forums but many of them are dying ....the Cairns Region Riders all migrated from ADV to FB much to my disgust. I still find FB awkward,

Any thoughts?

Mostly evil imo. Monetizing connections. That being said, there are some upsides. Interesting to see what acquaintances are up to. Like every other tech company, tons of smoke, mirrors and fake/scam accounts to keep the membership/engagement numbers improving every month. Really had to tell how much legitimate substance/value exists behind the curtain. I won't invest in any of them.

Even the forums which grew up in the early days of the internet have been heavily monitized and not to the benefit of the users. This one a case in point. At least Brave browser keeps the worst of the ad clutter completely at bay.
I find it ironic one has to pay to elimate ads ala Prime and others.

I'm on FB. Over the years it's become almost an essential thing to stay in touch with some friends and associates as unfortunately, reality is, it's the "front page of the internet" for a lot of people anymore and anything else isn't even an option anymore it seems. I do actually enjoy it for some stuff as well honestly, and I run a number of groups with a few hundred thousand members, so there's that. I short, I'm not leaving anytime soon.

I think the key with FB is just doing as much as you can for your privacy. I mean, it's still a privacy nightmare, but there are some things you can at least do to try to minimize the damage - I have location services turned off, bluetooth turned off for the app (both used for tracking purposes), I have all the possible "don't share or link my info or online status etc etc etc for advertising purposes" features disabled, and the iPhone has some nifty built in privacy features that I use as well with all social media, especially FB. I use a VPN quite often as well which I move around geographically specifically to muck with advertisers and data siphons. Between all of this I know that I'm doing a decent job of messing with the algorithms and blocking trackers on FB at least as the advertising I get is off the wall sometimes lol.

I don't do much other social media. I have a Twitter account but don't use it anymore since Space Karen took over. Was never really into it much anyways, same for Instagram and all the other stuff, it's never really appealed to me much. I do have a Bluesky account and should probably just close my X account and be done with it.

I got on FB when my daughter was travelling though Europe. It was easy to track her without her reporting in daily.

I added a few friends and relatives along the way but I'm getting tired of people posting on numerous different outlets, expecting me to sign up to all the different sites. I'm even tired of FB TBH.

If you know me well enough to think I care you will have my phone number and email.

I closed my X account and moved to Bluesky last week. I’ve actually had an account there since the beginning, but I’d finally had enough of Xitter, I couldn’t even go to see a forecast alert from one of the weather pages I follow (for example) without getting forcefully bombarded by a bunch of political garbage from people I don’t even follow and really couldn’t care less about, much less want to read their political drivel. FFS even Musk is injected in people’s feeds now, like it or not.

No thanks.

At least Bluesky just shows me content from people I actually followed.

another social media platform lordy

snaptoksky amalgamation coming in hot? lol

I loved Twitter for the immediacy of it, especially for things like sports. Anytime there was a Liverpool game, with the right follow list, it was a great accompaniment to watching, with journalists and fans in the stands giving an angle that you didn't get with the stream. Same for MotoGP. Having verified accounts from teams and athletes was also great, as you could get takes directly from them.

But when it got sold and made into the calamity that is X, all the 'improvements' totally killed the usefulness, and it became a bot and troll cesspool. If Bluesky can bring that up-to-the-second quality back, I'm all for it. Threads was a damp squib. I'm mostly on Reddit these days, but it's not as good as Bluesky for having a combined feed.

FB is mostly useless now, lots of AI-generated content interacted with by bots, and only the classifieds section is good. There is some useful stuff for things like motorcycle model-specific groups, but I wish those would just migrate to Reddit to be rid of the rest of the garbage. Instagram is good for showing off pics of your holidays and trips (and watching recycled TikToks as reels), Threads is a (much) crappier Insta, and TikTok is a good place to feel VERY old.

Bluesky seems to have achieved (and continues to build on) the critical mass to make this happen.

Yeah BlueSky acquiring a million a day.
I'm enjoying it, hiding the occasional political shite and wallowing in the JWT and Hubble photos....and many of the bird and nature photos as well.

I find it invigorating to see how happy people are to leave X behind ...I don't have any sense of that personally, having never engaged but the pure joy of those departing X and finding a new venue they like is infectious.

Meanwhile, he's suing a bunch of advertisers claiming they should be forced to advertise on X.

The free market doing what the free market does.

‘You will spend money to advertise on my product or I’ll get the new DA to sue your ***’
