So my sister wants a bike...

The 750 shadow is top notch, shaft drive, really low maintenance. Especially the 2008 and after when I guess they changed it to Fuel Injection.
Oil change is really easy too. Not hating on HD, and I do want one lol, but HD has 2 separate oils you have to change, oil and transmission. She can ride more in the summer and not worry about over heating.

Hey, better for a fellow biker than a cager, eh?

In all seriousness i know where u're coming from. My ex told me she was getting her license & a certain level of concern just hits me. I dont want to be selfish by telling her its not safe. She doesnt have much eye/body coordination as I do, thats what concerns me.

Plus how is her dad gonna view me if his daughter gets into an accident? He's probably gonna say what a bad influence that chap has on my girl. Another thing is scars look ok on guys... girls?? Not so much

What's wrong with scars on girls hmmm?

Where would you class the XR1200R? I'm not much of a Harley fan, but that is one of the very few Harleys I actually want to own.

I've seen a few HDs that I like as well. Nightster, the xr1200 etc, but I like them because they don't look like HDs. It's a personal taste thing. There are some Harleys that are just beautiful examples of what they are, and I can appreciate them even if they aren't my style.

Anyway, ribbing guys for riding a sportster is like ribbing them for driving a Z4, it's a bit sour-grapes and fair game to tease people who open themselves up to it. I ride a new classic bike and am probably guilty of pretty much any accusation someone could make about the guys who ride them. People who really appreciate bikes appreciate HDs. It's not what what you ride, it's how you ride it.

Wow talk about a hypocrite. I got my bike before my brother got his. He never stood in my way, and was always very supportive and he trusts my ability to take care of myself. This doesn't mean that he lacks concern for my welfare. He certainly understands that he has no control over my decision to ride. :p

wait a minute...

you're a girl????

This...
The best thing you probably can do is make time for her. Be involved with making the purchase, make sure she learns good riding practice. Basically make her into the best riding partner you could ever ask for.

I've been trying to encourage my siblings to ride for years and while i've had a few bites, nobody has committed.

That's what I did (and am doing) with my older sister ... she has always wanted a bike.. I ended up getting one before her ... now she bought a Ninja 500r for a good price with some cosmetic damage, i fixed it up for her and she will start riding this spring (along with just getting her license).. she will only be riding with me and my buddy that I trust for the first while, we will teach her the rules and proper etiquette of riding. I am looking forward to having this summer to get to know my sister better and show her how to do something and help her. while she has done so much for me... now my parents and grandparents are scarred shittless about her getting a bike because she is a little more on the edge than me (not the usual i know).

Basically ... be as involved as you can with her introduction to riding... make sure she wears the proper gear... and take her for her first few rides on the street.

Cheers,
Geoff

I would recommend the 883 personally from the Harley line. Sportsters have more cc's. The 883 is smaller and cheaper to buy. But keep in mind insuring a Harley wont be cheap regardless. Which I say the shadows are more feasible for a first bike. If she likes it then get a Harley for a second bike.

My old lady has an iron 883, she loves it almost as much as her c50 boulevard.

After trying to teach my sister how to drive manual, I cringe at the thought of trying to teach her how to ride.

Her version of driving manual was to completely ignore all my instructions, floor the gas, hold the clutch about half way down, shove the shifter in various directions until the car moves.

The two other people I've taught did fine. Sigh.

I tried teaching an ex manual & I found myself very angry at that session
