So long GTAM...for now

i've decided to hang up the leathers for now...been pondering it for a while and came to the conclusion that i am not willing to accept the risk of motorcycling at this time in my life. i think i surprised myself more with my decision than my wife as she has always been a full supporter of my 2 wheeled obsession...but after seeing a friend get injured last week and him talking about the additional burden his wife will have to take on while he recovers made me realize i am not willing to put my family in the same situation should something happen...yes, things can happen at anytime but we all know that riding is risky in general, no matter how good of a rider you are.

I know i will miss it every time i see a bike out in the summertime, they'll make me think about all of the trips i've taken and things i've experienced over the years on 2 wheels but i also remember the close calls i've had riding (especially in the city where everyone seems to be on a phone now.)...there's been some real close ones (blowing a tire on the DVP at 130kph) that made my life flash before my eyes too.

So it's goodbye for now GTAM! Have a great riding season and stay safe!

Have you ever thought of doing a couple of track days here and there?

Good suggestion, another option that I did when my son was very little - switch to dirt for a while - no left-turning drunks in Buicks on the trails.

Well, I've ridden far less than you, and I don't know if I could ever say f*ck it, I quit!

Best of luck!

I agree totally with klr guy. Switching to dirt has so many benefits. I used to ride my Duc a minimum of 10-13k a season but I think I put only 400k on it last year. I know for sure I rode at least that on my dirtbikes.

I went through something similar a few years ago after two friends had life changing crashes on road bikes - the pedaling kind. I'd road raced and riden as a passion for 25 years, and seen some nastiness, but two friends separated by weeks fighting for their lives and then fighting to get their cognition back freaked me out.

I was off the road for awhile but, similar to above, found comfort in the woods. I rode my mountain bike for a few months.

I'm back on the road but love mtb as much now.

Mix it up for a change and take your time. We need to recover from seeing friends injured too.

One way or another you'll be back. Be it track or dirtbike you wont make it very long without getting another bike...

Some people has ridden for years without any accidents. I think it has to do alot with the person.

As I've ridden longer. I realize I dont get alot of close calls. Knock on wood

Sent from my tablet using my paws

See ya... If your not into it no use doin it.

There is a common mis-perception that GTAM is for riders. In fact, it mostly has nothing at all to do with riding. So welcome back!!!

Everyone's perspective is different I guess. My wife and I had some friends get sick and others had life changing events just dropped on them. That is exactly why we DO ride. We just can't predict when we will not be able to ride ,or for that matter, live the way we enjoy. Best of luck beachguy, and i really mean it,hope all goes well.

Just by him posting this, shows he really does not want to quit. He will troll around and read the comments and then get back into it....so obvious.

Sorry to hear about your friend and hope they have a quick recovery. Does this mean you're going to sell off your gear and bike now?

You are doing the right thing...for now. You are a good and smart rider...except for the early years of dragging your bags out by Guelph Line.:lmao: If your head is not in it then don't put your body under.
