So what's on the books for GTAMers for the winter? Riding is over (for me it was early Nov) and now looking for some new things to do as 3 kids, a house, and work are not enough to take up every waking moment.

First off, I started racing on my PS4 as I remembered how much I enjoyed it when I was younger, and still do apparently! I tried out a racing wheel and after much searching scored a good Black Friday deal on my wheel. Stupid fun compared to the controller!

(Excuse the mess)

Also got into some puzzles but need to find a way to do it during my spare time, hide it from the monsters, and then continue when quiet time returns.

Now also planning on my renovation and measuring things out but with the upgraded furnace it doesn’t seem to be cold anywhere but the main living room and dining room…and that’s a mess of a job. But I may focus on the exterior instead of tearing the house apart.

How about the rest of you? Any big plans / activities / hobbies to keep you busy during the winter while we await the return of warm days?

ski season is hopefully around the corner , I try to get out once a week. GlenEden in Milton is crap , but its close and never busy in the afternoons
I shoot clay pidgeons every wednesday morning all yr round, its a standing date.

Im restarting my pepper mill business, its not an actual business they all end up given away but I like lathe work and its pretty satisfying to make something that doesnt take days , mostly I make clouds of shavings

I hate cold so here is where I spent most of my winter months... Zwift all the way. Follow me if you are there as well - my handle Alex T [Hi-NRG]

Wife’s is the white one, mines red. Maybe next year the oldest kiddo will join us.
I used to love skiing and snowboarding but my knees aren’t a fan of it anymore. I’ll still go out occasionally but I don’t have my own gear anymore and now just rent.

Wood lathe is a really fun and cathartic way to make a mess. It's also really good at teaching lessons in having a clear mind and focusing on the task at hand. Let your elbow come up and you will learn a lesson you never forget. Almost as much fun as turning on a metal lathe with the chuck key in (bonus points if you are holding onto the chuck key at the time).

I hope to hit the slopes 100 times this season. Outlook not good. Not open for at least another week and have a vacation booked which will miss some more days. I was going to be close last year until I broke my leg and ended the season. Four year old last year was out >50 times. Hopefully will beat that this year. Thankfully no new skis needed this year, just some bigger boots for growing kids. The upside to covid is some people bought their kids expensive boots that were never used and then took a bath on the resale. I ended up with stiffer boots for a kid than I really wanted but we'll see how it goes. Last year switched them from two-strap boots to four strap and the improvement was immediate and huge. Hopefully they are good enough to catch on with these ones as they are far stiffer again.

I guess I should finish my rocker plate. Riding on the trainer hurts so much. Maybe that will make it better. I have most of the parts for a rock and glide plate but need a few more to finish the project.

I hear you, it does hurt a lot more in the fall than in spring though - building up that seat tolerance so can handle 3-4hrs rides eventually... and I run if my bum hurts too much :)

Thankfully I am done with kids as after 15 minutes on the trainer it's lights out down below. The same bike isn't nearly the same experience on the road. If rocker plate doesn't fix it, it may be worth trying a noseless seat. They are a stupid idea on the road but may work on the trainer as you don't need the same bike control.

Gundam models are cheaper than I thought they were, have XVX-016 in the mail currently. There's some others I want to get but they're all out of stock.

I've tried racing wheels multiple times and never liked it. It always felt like there was a MASSIVE delay between making inputs and the video game reacting. Not a problem with flight sims though...

I've made a dozen and a half rolling pins using a router. My mini metal lathe isn't long enough and I can't justify the space for a wood lathe.

I'd like to build another canoe this winter but that depends on where to make the room. Other than that it's Mr Fixit.

I like the Italian style ( no actual handles ) rolling pins , maybe I’ll spin a couple up . I’ve got a 48” lathe and a 16” model . The 16” is a better unit . I did get 4 jaw and 3 jaw chucks for both and it’s been a game changer holding small parts and speeding things up .

I’m setting up my fly tying station again soon , it’s very therapeutic and I like to replicate flies tied by ‘masters’ . I collect feathers and have some game hunters friends get me some deer hair and squirrel tails . I don’t fly fish as much as I should but it’s pretty exciting to catch a fish on a fly you tied yourself

French? I have never heard them referred to as italian before. That is what I normally use as well. I still have my grandmas conventional rolling pin with a spiral burned into it from a stove but it is mainly for nostalgia.

That garage floor looks cleaner than my house. I must be doing something wrong.

I would argue it's because he has a spare garage to work on things and this is just his storage garage but the other one looks just as good. About once a year mine gets reasonably cleaned up and I use a leaf blower to get most dirt out. That time was about six months ago. No five second rule in the garage for me.

Was it my imagination or do you have a lift in your garage?

One thing I wish I had was a higher garage...another 3-4ft would be phenomenal. But I'm sure my wife prefers us keeping the bedroom instead of changing it to a garage attic.

She actually asked me 'why don't we just make the garage a bedroom....

There is a homemade four post that was made to hold two harleys. The plan is for the mini to go on that. No way would it lift a modern car. When I can find a two-post for a reasonable price, it will go in my wifes spot. When I put in the four post, slab was >8" thick which surprised me. Slightly conflicted about whether to cut and install footings for the two post. Lots of concrete but I don't know about reinforcement and I don't want to drop a car on my head. Another four-post could be easier but wife/kids will bang doors for sure. Two-post gives them a lot more room.
