Snap Rings - Oh the Joy!

These Fuckkerrs are a pain in the arrse... Now I've go that outta the way

Been dealing with these rings more recently while doing maintinence. The pilers I have now were not up to the task, so I bought another pair, they sucked returned them, and brought the ring with me to test a piler at PA, will do what I need for this task. But I need something more long term and functional.

While I was there I noticed this plier set with different ends, looked good and I believe this brand is known.

Thoughts suggestions?

The lisle ones look strong, I'm not sure if those fat ends would cause you issues with access/positioning. Over a lifetime, good snap rings pliers will save you some money and heartache as you are less likely to launch a ring across the shop and then need to waste time and money on a replacement.

I have crappy adjustable pliers like the pic below. I don't like them but don't use them often enough to justify buying a good set. They have worked for every project I needed them for.

some one show me how to remove retaining rings ,without eyes!

THOSE .... are a pain!

I took a bench grinder to an old pair of needle nose pliers.

Lisle is a decent brand
I never had any luck with those replaceable tip ones though

the area where the tips insert is too bulky
if the snap ring is recessed they're useless

would be better off to buy individually the sizes that you need

There are some tools that you can get at PA.(home of the tool shaped metal object) That isn't one of them imho.A proper set is about $100 and worth every penny.

Pin nose aka round nose pliers work pretty good too.
the big difference with using pliers instead of a special tool is you need to pull the pliers open instead of squeeze them open, the advantage is clearance.
... and you might already have one in the tool box right next to you.

You mean the little ones like these:

You push a jewellers screwdriver into the hole provided

Those have eyes. I think he is referring to these. A little bit of prying and twisting and a whole lot of swearing.

Cheap snap ring pliers are about as much fun as wearing skin tight white pants and getting explosive diarrhea on a packed bus..

I have this exact set from PA, total garbage. They can get some basic stuff done, but I need something better.

Yes rings like these (like the big one in the pix), with little plier holes, rings of various sizes

That brand is decent.

I prefer the Lang reversible ones myself.

It just depends on how often and how many sizes of snap ring you work with.
Yeah I am not sure, this really is the third time I've run into them (and of course they all have been different sizes). The last time was the ring under the clutch grip, that was fun, my wimpy tool wasn't up to the task and I launched the snap ring a couple of times, but luckly found it!

I LIKE those top ones, they work good! way better for fork seal rings then a bent piece of round wire.
yes swearing seem to be key.
