Side Mounted Cameras

Got a new lid (K5). It's a low profile looking helmet and my usual top mounted cylindrical camera setup ruins the look of this helmet. Front mount isn't an option with a cylindrical camera. So side mount is the only option left. My question is to any of you that have this setup, can you feel the weight of the camera or drag? Does the helmet feel lopsided? I don't want to be compensating or straining neck muscles at speed.

Thanks in advance.

If it's a recent gen action camera, then the weight is negligible and you won't notice a thing. Had a Sena Prism mounted on the side of my helmet, no drag, no weight.

However, if it's a full-frame Nikon DSLR duct-taped to the side of your helmet, then maybe you might feel the weight...
It's a Contour Roam. I have three of them. The main one I use is the first release which has an aluminum body and has some weight to it. I converted it to GoPro mounts. The subsequent versions are made from plastic. The original one gets me three to four hours of battery life which is why it's my go to camera. Any idea how much your Sena Prism weighed?

I still have the Contour Roam from when a sweet deal was posted on GTAM. Unfortunately it seems to have pooped out and no longer functioning.

Good camera.

Just the battery most likely. I haven't found a better camera since Contour.

If you upgrade your camera (say something cheap like an akaso v50x) you could do the chin mount, seems to be popular with the cool kids.

Thanks..I will keep this as an option. Glad to see someone challenging GoPro as their prices are quite high.

I ordered the GoPro Side Mount and converted the Contour Roam to GoPro mounts...so it's a side mount cylindrical camera. It doesn't spoil the look of the new AGV K-5. The Contour Roam mounts are crap. Ironically, the gun crowd seems to have taken to the Contour Roam so the mounts are going for a lot of money on eBay. Search your closets former Contour Roam owners!

I once got four hours on my Contour Roam in - 25 degrees sledding. It's an impressive camera that just won't die.

I’ve had side mounted cameras before. I’d recommend Drift. If I recall the Ghost X is far cheaper then a go pro and has 5 hr battery life standard. 8 hour is extra.

No issue with drag or weight

Near every testimonial on the Drift Ghost on Amazon says they stop working. And those who try and get tech support are not answered. One guy wrote that he did a firmware update and the commands are now in Chinese.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried the Sena Prism Tube? It looks like a viable option but looks very entry level.

The Contour Roam just works. Just having issues finding mounts. I converted it to top mount GoPro but strangely, it doesn't look very good on a new AGV K5 and K6...both very low profile helmets.

Well I’ve had 2 for perhaps 2 years total. No complaints.

I'm using Drift Ghost XL version, it legitimately gets 9 hours of recording on single charge... Footage and stabilization is not really close to GoPro quality, but it's a tradeoff... They've recently released Pro version, don't know much about it...

Thanks. I might give Drift a shot.

GoPro seem to have a monopoly on cams...and I don't like GoPro. I find the design ridiculous for an action camera.

Contour had the right design and then went out of business, got back in business and then went out of business again. I've heard they're in court with GoPro....which have such deep pockets, they'll be able to crush any competition... which they might be doing.

The only cylindrical camera on the market that works and stays working is the Contour....you can't kill them. The Sena is a toy that breaks.

I've been looking into this for a while now as well. IMO Drift is the only decent solution (warranty, support, spare parts, extra mounts, etc.) for side mount. But before they didn't have image stabilization and that was a show stopper for me - they just released their next model Pro with stabilization and I think it's a go for me .. finally..
it goes for 320CAD (250USD) - not cheap but less than bulky GoPro..
