Should GM, Ford or Dodge build motorcycles?

Hey,

I was watching American chopper last night and they started a battle build between Paul Jr. and Paul Sr. under the Cadillac brand theme. Seems Jr. is killing Sr. and I'll have to wait 'till next week to se the final product.

This made me wonder, why have the big three never tried to build a bike? I mean Suzuki, BMW and Triumph have with great success. Could help them as they are so far in the tank right now it couldn't hurt.

Just wondering???

Triumph cars and Triumph motorcycles were never related to each other.

But don't forget Honda. Yamaha also has some automotive ties, with Ford and Toyota I think.

And doesn't Harley use the ladder frame from the old AMC Pacer for it's bikes? :D

Very bad idea. You remember what happened when Dodge tried to make a motorcycle?

I'd like to see them build a good, reliable car again, before they branch out into a new vehicle field.

.. are hardly inspiring reputations for motorcycles that would be much more dependant on vehicle integrity for safety on two wheels.

might want to recheck the numbers, the big three are doing really well.

don't remind me. I remember pondering ford stock when it was $1.68 a year or two back. why is it always the ones I don't touch?

the last time dodge tried to build a bike didn't they make it a trike with a v8 viper motor on it?

Learn how to make a realiable car before you start trying to make a motorcycle ;)

Honda, BMW and to a lesser extent Suzuki, got started making motorcycles first, then moving into cars.

Wouldn't make sense for the big 3 to go backwards and start making bikes.

I thought I recall not that long ago that VW was pondering making a motorcycle?

I don't think the big 3 have a lot of spare cash around to be gambling on motorcycles. They have enough issues building competitive cars..

Didn't Chrysler just announce a 370 million dollar loss in Q2? I think the other two are doing ok, Chrysler has not rounded the corner yet.

I'd say Ford is building more than competitive cars these days. Let's not forget they turned down the bailout. They are also posting a really strong half, with significant profit improvements over last year.

That being said...Ford's solution to building a motorcycle would probably be to include SYNC that people would try to operate as they rode. /shudders

Ford already makes money from motorcycles. They slap HD emblems on over-optioned pickup trucks.
