Shoei to Arai

Currently have a Shoei RF-1000 thats about 4-5 years old. Im thinking of getting into an Arai Corsair V but heard its really noisey due to all the ventilation it has and that its not really comparable to my Shoei since its not an X-11 or X-12. Anyone ever done the switch from a shoei to an arai?? I currently use my bike to commute is about 30mins from toronto to etobicoke and its mainly highway...I will go on longer rides but dont want to be irratated by whistling and wind noises.

I have used shoeis for many years and feel it fits my noggin best. The Arai seem to be rounder on the inside and just dont feel as snug to me. Each manufacturer has a different style and you should try a few on to see if they fit right.

What is it about the Corsair V that interests you? Yes it flows more air but there are other options for the street that would still do a great job. Comparable to the RF-1000 (now RF-1100) would be the RX-Q or Signet-Q, depending on your head shape.

When I crashed in RF-1000, tried multiple helmets from every available manufacturer at GP (Suomy, AGV (really wanted AGV), Arai to mention a few). At the end of the day, RF-1100 fit the best and was the most comfortable to wear.

Agree with your last point. Im the opposite, round head and Arai fits best while Shoei feels tight on the sides. This is generally across the line. The right fit is most important, brand and graphics lower priority for me.

I went from an RF-1000 to an RX-Q and I prefer my RF-1000. First of for me it feels like the Shoei was more aerodynamic. Ventilation looks similar but with the Shoei I actually felt the air coming in cooling my head with the Arai not so much. There's also a chin guard that attaches to the Shoei which prevented air/debris from coming in were as the Arai it's a pull down which doesn't really do anything. There's times were dust/sand from the road was coming in. The plus side on my RX-Q though is that all the padding comes off so you can wash it were as the RF-1000 only the cheek pads comes off. I'm probably gonna go back to Shoei when I'm done with this helmet.

Corsair v is meant really for the track. So if you're using it for the street there are better options. Ill say this like everyone else. Get what fits your head

keep in mind if you ever change shields on an arai you'll have to know what you're doing lol...it's really easy once you get it down but for the first timers out there...you oughta watch a youtube video on how to lol...not as simple as a shoei (had a tzr a few yrs back)... but i love my arai and wouldn't go back to a shoei.

if yer planning to spend that much dough on a helmet, get a Schuberth SR1. They're about the same price point and can actually get it cheaper in European dealers

I have a Corsair V. The part where is goes narrow by the jaw line sucks for me. It presses against my jaw. It's not painful, but definitely annoying. I bought thinner cheek pads, but that's not the problem, it's the shell itself. I wonder if it's just my helmet that is the problem. When I was looking for helmets, I tried on the Corsair V at a few shops and never had the problem. But I bought my helmet online (wanted the skull design). I guess I'll find out when I go helmet shopping over the winter... this season is the 5 year mark for my lid.

The wind noise doesn't bother me and I don't wear ear plugs, but it seems to bother many.

Wow, seriously. It is NOT about the price or what you get for the price. It's how the helmet fits your head. IMHO the worst thing to do is to order a helmet online without ever trying it on.

you are right. I was under the assumption that OP was looking for a high end helmet and I suggested the SR1 which has a similar fit to the Shoei's (from my experience)

^ True. Try them all.
I went from a 4 year old Arai ?? to a Shoei RF1100. Not going to lie to you, LOVED the Arai and the Shoei is OK. The only new Arai that fit my head shape was their top of the line one @ $1100 or something.

Arai Coarsair? VS Shoei RF1100
Arai = love the pull down chin feature, weight was very light, comfortable, large field of view, less wind noise
Shoei = Overall price + cheaper lenses, nicer designs, 5x improvement on venting, comes with neck shield and fog guard

Can't compare a corsair v to a rf-1100. They aren't meant for the same type of riding. Like the op said it should be more corsair v vs. x12

If you like the RF-1000/1100 give the HJC RPHA 10 a try on. I've never been an HJC fanboy but this helmet is VERY good.

Arai is really meant for long oval (narrow) heads which probably explains the pressure you're experiencing. Trying it on in a store for a few minutes is much different that having it on your head for a few hours at a time to check true fitment. Your head might be more of an intermediate oval shape which Shoei is. I cross shopped both brands but ended up with an AGV helmet since it fit my head the best.

I was a long time arai fan (currently have an HJC rps-10 but was given an early birthday gift to get a new lid) and had planned on buying the corsair V. I decided I'd try the shoei X-12 and the shark race-r pro as well. As soon as I picked up the shoei I noticed how unbelievably heavy it was but it didn't fit either so it was out. Standing there trying the arai then back to the shark several times I ended up with the shark. If your looking for a top of the line lid don't leave this one out.

I tried on the Race-R Pro. In terms of weight, it's comparable to the Corsair V...actually it might be a bit lighter. I'm a bit spoiled in terms of weight though as I currently have the Nexx Xr1r carbon. That thing feels like you're not even wearing a helmet.

Anyway, I love how incredibly smooth the Race-R Pro's visor is. It just screams quality when you shut that thing close.

This is true of the Signet-Q or previous Profile model. The rest in the current lineup are Intermediate Oval which is supposed to be more neutral/round, including the Corsair. For round heads like mine the discontinued Quantum-2, Round Oval shape was a perfect fit.

I have 3 helmets, a Shoei RF1100, an Arai XD3 and a Schuberth C3 Pro. They all fit very well and are comfortable, though the Schuberth is the best hands down. Better material makes it more comfortable for the long hauls, plus the built in audio is pretty sweet. The schuberth is the quietest helmet I have, but its no way dead silent, just better then the shoei and of course the arai which is not supposed to be a quiet helmet.
