Shell/Gas Station Rant

Actually this is one of the only nice areas of scarborough, West Rouge.

I think you need to drive north before making this comment. ;) The West Rougers may have a quarrel with you including this area in their community. :o

ps. I go to the Petro Queen further up Kingston Road. It is full serve but I fill it myself while sitting on my bike... and chatting with the attendant who now has nothing to do.

I love the people saying they don't fill at shell anymore. Glad you guys like your ethanol.

Seriously though OP. Would it have so hard to put the nozzle on the ground, put your cap on, and then move the bike and pick the nozzle back up.

SHELL HELPS WITH
GASOLINE SAFETY

ALWAYS dismount from your motorbike before
fueling. Fuel spilled onto the hot exhaust or
engine could cause a fire, injuring you and others.

I love the bleatings of a beleaguered biker as much as the next troll but this is over the top. Will the nozzle not stay in the filler neck especially when aided by the supple fingers of one hand. Other hand on handlebar, a little shimmy shimmy coco puff, next thing you know you're at a distance from the pump great enough to sidestand it. GTFO and continue pumping. Learn to think on the fly.

Their rules, take it or leave it, no point in being an ******* and bitching out a min wage kid doing their job. ****ing bullies.

It's their rules, so comply. Doesn't shell have the best gas? I was told by a tech to only use Shell gas on the SS. So why hate on Shell. On another note, someone posted that they were asked to once take off their helmet. C'mon are you for real.

Didn't know one has to get off bike ... I always sit on bike and no one had said a thing.

I get off my bike every time I fill up (just personal preference) so that has never been a problem for me.

Although once I was at an ESSO station on Lakeshore and I was entering in my credit card pin and mid way through typing the pump beeped and said "transaction cancelled please pre-pay inside" or something like that. At first I thought it was just a pump malfunction so I just walked my bike to a different pump (which had a clear view of the employee at the counter) and I saw the clerk inside giving me a death stare. This is when I realized the f***er thought I was going to steal gas because I had my helmet on, so he cancelled my original transaction even though I was paying with credit card...

I'm glad I was wearing my modular helmet that night because I sure as hell wasn't going to remove my helmet to fill up, so I flipped up my face shield and made sure he saw I was putting my credit card in the pump. That time he let me fill up, but still gave me a death stare until I rode off...

I realize there is potential for accidents to happen when sitting on your bike while fuelling, but how do you guys fill your tanks completely if your bike is on its sidestand leaning to one side? That's pretty much the only reason why I fill up while sitting on my bike.

Last time I did it once the tank was close to full I just leveled it with my hip and my right hand; hip pushing on the fairing, right hand pulling on the right handle. Stabilizes the bike straight and you still have your left hand to give gentle pulls on the gas pump.

Seriously? how much does that add? I can see someone doing that in the Northwest Territories not in Brampton.

Sometimes I get an extra litre or 2 in.

This, I like the comfort of knowing the extra 70 or so km I get out of those 3-4 litres are in there when I'm on long trips.

Poor dude making minimum wage, just trying to make it through the day and trying not to lose his job by doing what he's been told to do... you must have been the highlight of his day.

Here are the Ontario laws that govern refueling your vehicle. Laws in other provinces and states will vary. There is nothing in the law specific to motorcycles. A "fuel dispensing station" = gas station. The law also covers signage, no smoking, equipment, etc, and is very thorough.

Ontario Fire Protection and Prevention Act said:
4.5.8.6.
(4) Every person dispensing flammable liquids and combustible liquids shall
(a) take precautions to prevent overflow or spillage of the liquid being dispensed,

(b) not knowingly overfill the fuel system,
(c) except as otherwise stated in Article 4.5.8.5., in the event of spillage, immediately apply an absorbent material to soak up the spillage in conformance with Article 4.1.6.3.,
(d) not dispense Class I or II liquids in proximity to open sources of ignition,
(e) not use any object or device that is not an integral part of the hose nozzle valve assembly to maintain the flow of fuel, and
(f) not dispense the liquids into containers that are in a vehicle, watercraft or floatplane.

If your bike comes only with a side stand and you refuel astride your bike to get the max amount of gas into your bike you are overfilling your fuel system, contrary to 4.5.8.6.4(b). The gas attendant has the obligation to cut off your gas and tell you to get off your bike. If the gas attendant does not cut off your gas you may file a grievance to the Ontario Fire Marshall, who will file a charge against the gas station.

I am not clear on what "(a) take precautions to prevent overflow or spillage of the liquid being dispensed," means for refueling astride your bike.

As with many fire laws, charges and enforcement are quite difficult unless it is after a fire.

The last time I remember discussing this topic was in 2011, where we did 5 pages.

You may refuel any way you wish, but know that there are Ontario laws that try to protect you. The fact that these laws are not enforced does not negate their existence. You really should thank the gas station attendant for having your best interests as heart, even if you do not.

I still remember the first time an attendant told me that, It was in around 1986, so they have had that in place since at least then.

I don't see the problem here. Gas pumps, air compressors, Tim Hortons windows: all these are DESIGNED for you to ride right up. Why would you need to get off the bike to use these?

TorontoBoy -- the definition/interpretation of "overfilling" that you provide in the paragraph below your quote is not part of the Act -- can you provide the source? Is this in Regulations created under the Act, or in case law?

I usually fill may tank when the needle is right above the empty line so at $5 of gas, my tank would be 90% full. No problem here :P
