Seriously?? NO Helmet?

I try not to be one of "those" riders who insists that the only way to ride is my way. As long as you're friendly to other riders and don't reinforce all the negative stereotypes about motorcycle riders doing dangerous and irresponsible things on the road, you're okay in my books, whether you ride around in medieval armour or a basketball jersey.

But I would really prefer that the damage in this picture happen to my helmet and not to my face.

Played hockey with a helmet and couldn't imagine playing without it. Same with motorized toys...helmet just seems right.

I'm heading back from a cross country ride to California and decided to go helmetless for about 100km while in Salt Lake City. Maybe I'm not used to it, but after 45 minutes of 120kph wind swirling around your head, the itchy scalp was pretty annoying. The rest of the trip was helmeted.

As someone mentioned, I would probably try without a helmet if I went down to bike week in Florida or something and I was just riding around at low speeds (although it's technically still dangerous, you could fall off at 5pmh and land head first).
Other than that, I would always have it on. It only takes about 20 seconds to put it on, tie the strap and make sure it's snug anyways. And if your helmet is "uncomfortable" in the sense that it puts pressure on parts of your head, you aren't wearing the right helmet to begin with.

I am becoming so used to my helmet now that I could probably wear it all day. Although I am sure a lot of people would look at me funny...

Saw a bunch of people riding helmetless on my trip to Indianapolis last weekend. I might try it a few times but wouldn't do it on a regular basis. I've ridden on my driveway when parking/moving the bike at home without one but I'm always thinking it's probably not a great idea.

Recently returned from 3 days in Toledo (drew the short straw at work). Very soon after crossing the state line, it became apparent that Ohio does not have a helmet law.

Last year as soon I crossed the state line into New Hampshire (state slogan 'Live Free or Die', seriously!), saw the same thing, Harley and cruiser riders riding helmetless, sport bike and European bikers wearing full gear. I wonder what that says? Easy Rider still lives!

There are only 16 states having mandatory helmet laws, all the rest either have no helmet law or helmet required for those under 20 years, figuring that under 20 one is too stupid to know anything, but once they are an adult they can just be reckless.

We know where it got Gary ('you're a piece of work' quoting Trump) Bussey 25 years ago when he crashed his bike helmetless. He hit his head on a curb and it shows alright. And he's still adamant about not wearing a helmet.

In Florida you don't need a helmet but its mandatory to wear eye protection due to the many bugs. Apparently there seems to be some logic to that law at least.

I've ridden in/through a lot of States with no helmet laws (or else just mandatory for those under 18) and never taken a lidless ride yet. I was tempted once while camping in Pennsylvania and just wanted to run to the corner store, but the speed of those trucks ripping around the blind corner right before the entrance to the campgrounds quickly changed my mind. But regardless, I don't have a big touring windshield and my fullface serves for comfort as well as protection.

meh, there's enough crap that bounces of my visor that i would prefer it keeps doing so rather than my face...if i was cruising slow around town or something then at least some eye protection, but on any main roads and stuff with other faster moving vehicles, i'd put on my lid...

Up the driveway to park the bike is about all I would do w/o a full face.
Is there any benefit to the 1/2 helmets other than to meet the minimums? Oh and to hide the bald spots. :)

Slight hijack but I saw one of the squid wheelie crash videos recently but can't locate it. There were a bunch of bikes and one bike dumps with the rider sliding down the road on his back, feet first with his running shoes(?) taking the weight. He did have a helmet on but was just wearing shorts so I assume no other gear. It was a long slide and unless he was arching his back and using his helmet to minimize rash to his back he would have been hamburger.

Not sure why but I don't think I would ever do it on a standard or sport bike. For some reason I have it in my head I would try it on a cruiser.

No real justification, likely I have been watching too many of those "chopper" shows on TV and my brain is going soft (maybe a soft brain bounces better?).

we just got back from PA too, and we had guys flying by at 150km+ in the twisties no helmets.. just shook our heads and gave a sarcastic thumbs..

Speed or lack of speed is not any safer. In fact the bike is less stable at lower speeds, so thinking it's safer to ride without a helmet at lower speeds is not accurate. I have ridden without a helmer while in PA a few years back, and do understand the attraction. It has nothing to do with comfort and everything to do with that sense of freedom. Everything is so open, no helmet, no nothing blocking the view or feel of being out doors. I personally would wear a helmet whether we had a helmet law or not, I just feel better about the protection on my noggin. Though I am in support of not having a helmet law, I think it should be the riders choice.

those bad *** accountants on R1200s (who here can throw the CGA gang finger sign?) I say to each his own.

As a son of an accountant and brother to a math teacher... bhahahahahahahaha, good ****.

If I were to say I work construction and prefer wearing sandles because I like the breeze on my toes and don't like the weight and constraint of steel toed work boots and besides, the folks in Guatemala don't wear steel toed boots, people would think I'm nuts. But motorcycle helmets is different?

If you could see the three inch scar above my left eye I got WHILE wearing a helmet... you'd know why I'd never go lidless again.

Riding without a helmet is kinda like streaking... it's liberating at first, then suddenly that naked feeling starts settling in and suddenly you're thinking "WTF am I doing?!"

I've never streaked before.

Coming up I-75 in Ohio headed for Michigan, in the rain as a bonus, I was passed by a couple of sport bike riders whose full-face helmets with pretty visors were proudly strapped to the sides of their bikes. They must have really enjoyed the pelting-BB effect of rain drops on bare face while doing so.

About 20 minutes later, I see them stopped on the side of I-75, just a few feet before the Welcome to Michigan sign, putting on their helmets. Michigan has a compulsory helmet law.

I bet they liked putting on their helmets after at least 20 minutes of rain water mixed with road tar and oil that has splashed up and puddled in their helmets now.
