Selling car privately?

Anyone sell their cars privately? Looks like the GTI will be coming my way sooner rather than later, and I need to setup the Volt for a sale soon.

Will get the GTI for a week when BIL is away to confirm it's a good car / fit for me, and then if all goes well I'll probably take over the least for 8 months, and buy it out at the end.

How do you deal with the large amount without getting scammed?
Best way to exchange funds? Bikes are easy....but this is 2x more than a bike purchase.
Staying safe?
Anyone sell to CARVANA? or CARMAX? I'll have to confirm if they even are active in Canada.

Thanks!

Seems like there are lots of services to help in the sales process. I am sure they all take a cut, but if it offers convenience and protection, might be worth it. Found these in my first search.

clutch.ca
canadadrives.ca

I'd give the sketchy car buying places a chance. I suspect the party is over but for a while, they were offering ridiculous numbers.

Is he buying or leasing the next car? You could transfer the vehicle to your sister tax free and he could trade the volt in to save the tax. On that note, you may be able to transfer the GTI to you tax-free. Alternatively, talk to VW dealership and they may be happy taking the Volt as a trade on the GTI now to give them something to sell.

Thanks both! I hear the clutch.ca commercials, but not the canadadrives.ca. May post it as I believe there is no obligation on going through the process. Need to detail / clean the car.

Good call on the trade in at VW...BIL is leasing the M2. Not sure how I could transfer the GTI to me tax free...last I recall that's only from parent to child, not in b/w siblings (but been a while since I checked).

Love the idea of trading it in on the GTI...that would be the cleanest and easiest by far. Def worth a few grand.

Siblings allowed. Not brother-in-law though.

EDIT:
Depending on how amenable your sister is, she may be able to gift you the GTI and then give her the money from the volt when it sells. No monetary advantage to trade-in if gift is in play. No idea how gift works with lease.

@mimico_polak one of my friends that you may know (Jenn B) bought her car from Canada Drives
Said it was easy and painless
I would assume the same to be true of the selling

Both that and Clutch are good options.

They come to you.

Easy Peasy.

Now if you had an SUV, I'd just come buy it

No SUVs in this family Joe. Just minivans and hybrids currently.

Did the pilot finally give up (or did the cancer kill it)?
Neither
Rust is obviously worsening, but no panels falling apart.
Still runs well.
Hit 302k this weekend.
I have about another 20-30k before I need to drop serious coin (timing belt, oil pump, oil pan gasket, shocks etc)
So starting the looking process again.
I've come to accept that I will probably not get a 7/8 seater, as they are out of my "wanna spend" budget.
So now looking at:
Edge
Grand Cherokee etc in the 150k range 2014+

It may not be the best plan, but once vehicle pass 300K, I don't do timing belts any more. So much money in preventative maintenance. If it pops, I didn't lose a lot. Similar program for the rest of your list too. Spending 3K+ on things that barely affect the resale value and probably don't affect the usable life (although playing with fire) doesn't make sense to me.

Hyundai/Mazda make some big one that should be cheaper than a pilot. The mazda may have worse cancer than your old one though.

F'n ballerz in this thread too??

Sold a high dollar car in peak(ish?) COVID in 2021. Went with buyer to his bank and personally witnessed him getting a draft straight from the teller.
Signed over ownership, he came a few days later with plates and drove it home. However, this was a pretty desirable car and I was able to take my pick of which buyer I liked.

Guess that wasn't so helpful. Unless you're getting non-stop offers on the Volt?

Thanks @Wind Shear. I'm under no delusions that my car is super desirable. BIL said he'll give me the max notice when he hears about his car, then I'll post it and see interest.

I'll also post to all the online buying sites and just sell it to whichever is highest (also talk to VW about trade) and then make the call.

Only, only, only issue...do I want a 6MT for 55km on the 401 in rush hour...

6MT on the 401 during rush hour?
Do-able if the power delivery does not demand a constant rowing of the stick shift. I did it for a year and while "auto" is a nice to have in such conditions, you get used to MT and a plus is that you don't have to wait for the revs to catch up to the gear ratio (the last part refers to a CVT auto)

I have near zero concerns with a MT in rush hour (and only have/had manuals, for decades). You learn to do it to the point it is not a thought process. It also helps if the gearing will also let you release the clutch without giving it gas and roll along. If the gearing in first is steep and you have to ride the clutch more, that may suck or if the clutch pedal is very heavy.

Look at traffic in other parts of the world and consider most of their cars are (or were) manual...
