Seeking someone to look over a first bike for me

Hey everyone,

I am in the process of securing the purchase of my first bike! a 2012 Black Honda CBR125. Problem is, I live in Toronto (with no car), and the seller is in Orangeville.

He said he was willing to deliver the bike to me (so I can get it registered and sit it in a garage until I get my M2 in early June), but I was hoping someone on here who lives in that area might be willing to go and inspect the bike for me (and snap some pics) to make sure its not a complete turd. It only has 4,000km on the odo so I imagine it's in perfect shape, but figured I'd ask if anyone here would be willing to assist me in my purchase. The seller said he is willing to meet a third party for an inspection of the motorcycle before selling it to me.

Willing to compensate for your time if needed of course. Your help would be very greatly appreciated :)

4000km? I wouldn't be too worried - If the bike starts, runs, and idles properly;
.....or arrange by phone to have a shop in orangeville check it out. If they like the bike - seal the deal and have the shop mechanical fitness. Alternatively use any estimated cost of repair to re-negotiate the price before closing the deal - or walk away. Should be less than a $100 for the shop to look / see inspect.
One stop shopping, grab plates/ownership in orangeville and call your insurer. best luck. Would be nice to ride it home?

EDIT perhaps a gtam member would recommend a good shop in orangeville.

Honestly. Guy said he would do 1800 reluctantly, but even in my financial position - if he will drive it over for me from Orangeville to Toronto and lays for the UVIP, I see that as 100 well spent and an amicable sale for both parties.

Contacted frekeyguy, will see what he says :) if it doesn’t pan out I’ll ask a shop

Not to be an arse, but I am here for your benefit- $1800 is on the high end for a cbr125. Only my opinion only, I would get a cbr250 for a couple hundred more. 250 is a LOT more bike, still newbie friendly, and 400 series hwy legal. Lots of bikes out there.

I think 125 is hwy legal too (IIRC the line is at 50cc). I agree though, 250 can legitimately be a forever bike, a 125 is much less likely to be a forever bike. 250 opens up ABS possibility as well.

I thought 125's were trading just over $1000? Now it is spring and it has low miles, but personally, I would rather have a starter bike that comes rashed up and have $800 in my pocket. The inevitable first tip over instantly destroys that $800 anyway.

Change. in hindsight, I wouldn't ride an 80kmhr 125cc on the 400 series.

I too have seen cbr125's selling in the $800-1500 range.
Dougie is doing a speed limit review of 400 series highways. I am ok with a 125 and a 100 limit. If it jumps to 120, they will probably have to up the minimum engine size again.

a new speed limit, cool
wonder if our unelected shadow government is okay with this?

I have seen most 125s for around the 1900-2000 mark. some are 1500, but I am also looking for a black one specifically.

Additionally, I think insurance quotes will be higher on a 250. Riders Plus quoted me $2646 for my first year owning a bike with an M2 exit course. That sounds like about as good as I can expect at my age and experience level. Still waiting to do some more quotes, but I expect a 250 will be more. I imagine they will want another $400 at least per year for a 250-300.

I also am highly reluctant to ride on a highway for the first while. This bike is meant to be a city rider 98% of the time, and if I ever travel anywhere, I am more than happy taking county roads or 80km/h highways. Speed is pretty much the last thing on my table of considerations, provided it can do at least 80-100.

Correction, I have seen some in the 1400 ball part occasionally. But they seemed to be more beat up. Which I guess isn't a big deal. But if I'm shooting for straight up reliability, might as well spend a few hundred on a super low mileage ride?

Other reason I am more or less content with $1900 is because the seller agreed to deliver it to me with that cost. I personally haven't seen an $800 cbr125, I imagine thats because we are encroaching on peak season?

The convenience of having someone bring it to me is a huuuuuggeee plus.

I hear you. Perhaps make your offer for the bike with the uvip and mechanical fitness; then find someone with a van/pickup/trailer hitch. Rent a open uhaul trailer for $30. However you would have to put the bike in your name so the ownership states "fit" so you won't need another mechanical fitness (good for 36 days). Make the offer your ok with- and when he says no, politely tell him "here's my phone number, try to get what you want for it, but if you change your mind here is my number." On more than a few occasions I have gotten a call back in 1-3 days.

So I get the guy to get a safety and UVIP and delivery included in the $1900? And then I register it as fit once I register it?

I can register with just the paperwork and signature on UVIP right... don't need seller present? I read the thread on UVIPs here, seems pretty open ended and case by case based.

Seller doesn't need to be there when you've got all the paperwork signed and in order.

On sketchy small bikes going on the highway, I once drove past a Honda PCX 150 two-upped on the 404.

EDIT
Have a bill of sale signed, or bill of sale section on uvip signed, mech fitness, and the ownership signed by the seller - there is a section on the ownership that requires the sellers signature.
I have had insurer's ask for a copy of mechanical fitness. Make a copy. r Mechanical fitness is good for five weeks from DATE of issue. You will need to change over ownership within this period for your new ownership to state "fit". You can insure and plate it when you are ready later in june.
