Seeking a dependable off-road bike

I purchased a property up north for hunting that is of a fair size to travel thru and realized the limitations of using my 4x4. The land is a mix of tough terrain, creeks, bogs etc so I have been looking locally up there for an enduro type used bike that I can take up from the city. An ATV would surely get stolen up in those parts and I have no room down here to store such with a trailer.

The folks up there never seem to throw out any vehicles but keep them until they become fixtures in the back woods. I looked at an interesting Honda Elsinore but it was two stroke and I would prefer a four stroke for the torque. I would consider a barn find if not too rough.

Any suggestions for something in the range of 250 to 400 cc, used. easy to work on and a source to purchase ?

A Honda XL/XR would be ideal. For the sake of simplicity and durability I'd look for one from 1979 to 1982 as they were 2 valve, single carb versions. The last couple generations are quite good too as they went back to a single carb, but the asking prices on the used market are high.

4 stroke Yamaha's aren't terrible, an XT/TTR225 might be just the ticket and would probably be cheaper than the Hondas. The XT350's are good too, but pricing is close to that of a more recent 250.

The KLR 250 would also be a solid choice.

I personally find the Yamaha's to be more expensive, and also a bit better. The honda have more collectability value, while the yamaha's are bought to be ridden. I don't think you can go wrong with an XT225-350.

I have been perusing the prices and surprised at the asking prices for such bikes.

I can't see spending $3K for a well used bike.

Unfortunately lots of people are prepared to spend 3k on a well used bike. You may get lucky or you may have to wait.

$2000 for a running bike and $3000 for something in decent shape is about the lowest you will find a dirt bike for in my opinion.

For what your doing I would probably try to find a KDX 200 or 220. Maybe RMX250. Breaking trail is tough to do, I wouldn’t go with a “trail” bike you need a proper off road bike.

Off road 2 strokes between 200-300cc’s make plenty of torque. They will go over or climb anything you put in front of them.

There's a KDX 200 in Lethbridge for $1500 if they want to spend $2000 in gas to save $1500 on the bike.

Where's trials when we need him? A trials bike may actually be a good fit for this application. He won't be travelling long distances so the seat is much less important than maneuverability/flexibility.

A trials bike would be a cool effective way of getting around. Would have to travel pretty light.

I’d like for him to come back. There’s no denying he loves motorcycles and has a lot of experience.

A Tenaci-Wong 150 would be perfect. They are electric start and come with a seat.
Ya.... I'm really broken up about Trials not being around.

That sucks. Didn't they all get destroyed in a fire? I'm assuming you didn't get the one (or more) that you planned on picking up?

A buddy just sold his Yamaha XT250 to Dual Sports Plus in Brantford. Not sure what they are asking. I believe it is a 2016 with 8K km on it. Very clean bike. Would have bought it myself if I had the spare $ laying around.
