Lithium battery or Lead acid type, it makes a difference. The one Honda sells is very good as a tender, not so good as a quick charger on lead acid batteries, on connection it will go into a discharge cycle before it starts to charge it. Smart chargers stop charging once the battery is fully charged so as to not boil it dry. If your battery is weak then it doesn't know the battery is fully charged and then it will boil it dry.
Caution note: do not attempt to charge a lithium battery in sub zero temperatures, they have been known to burst into flames because of that :|
I have the same one, it's idiot proof. Literally plug it in and done. I would recommend installing the charging leads to the battery (don't use the alligator clips) and getting the extension cord to go with it.
