Scuba

Further to the renting, if you can hold off on buying for a while, you can learn more about the gear you may want to own on the long run. I bought so much stupid gear that I ended up selling again because in the beginning of your diving career, to quote one of the more infamous diving instructors in Canada "You don't know what you don't know."

Agreed, which is why I've been holding off on the expensive stuff. I had a good idea of what I was looking for in a wetsuit/fins/etc after talking to a bunch of experienced divers.

Open water here :) just got in March 2010

I did my classes in Canada and did the dives in Mexico...

Wish I had more time and money to do more dives....

Probably going to get my advance next year :)

Can't wait!

fin/mask is a must own, followed by your own wet suit...

having your own octopus is a big bonus too...depending where u dive the octopuses get pretty banged up. Nothing worse than knowing youre bleeding air from a bad line and its cutting into your underwater time.

i have my own mask/fin and wet suit...later down the road when diving becomes more frequent that what its now (a few dives a year) i'll invest in a BCD and octopus as well.

By Octopus, do you mean regulator setup? Octopus is generally understood as the alternate second stage on a reg setup.

As far as owning, I think a good quality computer is a good bet. Everyone dives computers now, it adds a huge additional element of safety to recreational diving. You want wrist mount, not those ridiculous console mounted air-integrated units.

it looks like an octopus, hence the name...lol

That's how I've always heard it too, despite the fact that the entire reg setup DOES look like an octopus...

Not to mention the additional bottom time you get over tables.

My wife and I got our scuba certification in a couple of different places in the Carribean.

Two of the kids got theirs while I did my open water in Turks & Caicos. The other still has ear tubes :(

I did my open water diver and adventure diver... Was supposed to mail the stuff out to get the certification but it got lost during move... oh well I'll just have to do it agian. Did all my diving in the Red Sea in Egypt... Swam with sea turtles, manatees, little nemos, checked out octopuses. One of the funnest things I have ever done. I want to go back there and check out the dolphins and sharks they have...

My grandpere taught me the basics for scuba but I really want to get certified. Thinking I will take the pool sessions thru the winter and start the process. Any tips? Its been years though :( Last time I don'ed a tank the adult size was too big and I couldnt lift my head... and the tank was enough weight to balance me haha.

Lucky bastard

Just about to finish my open water course.

But I did get to go last year an dive in Cuba through the resort I was at.

Don't think I will be able to dive to deep as I have bad allergies that plug up my sinus's. Not the best for equalizing. Lol

300+ dives, locally and internationally. There is some great diving in our own backyard. Niagara River, Kingston, Ivy Lea, Brockville, Lost Villages near Cornwall (if you really enjoy current). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lost_Villages

Taught me something today.

I couldn't imagine diving in the river right where Cornwall is, was out there on the GF's Cigarette boat and the current there is absolutely nuts... I assume it's more mellow near Long Sault.

scuba is amazing, it's been a few years since I had a chance to go since I havn't been to the carribean in a while. Did my certification in the Caymans it was incredible.

Actually looking into doing some diving locally, I hear tobermory has some decent dive sites has anyone here been up there?

They have group dives around two-three times a day. Alot of shipwrecks to see. If you don't do group dives, and you can easily scuba the shoreline, as it gets fairly deep close to the cliffs.

I have my Padi rescue and own everything. Dry suit, 119HP steel tanks and stainless backplate with dive rite wing.

chill out Thursday night
a bunch of us are getting together
dive the Sligo at 730pm...35 bucks
(70ft, 45degrees, qualified divers)

I got an Open Water cert in Thailand 4yrs ago. Haven't done really any diving in the last few years.

My last dive was a night dive and I had some problems equalizing on a descent and it felt like my tooth was going to EXPLODE out of my mouth. It just happened all of a sudden out of nowhere. I did two dives earlier that day too and for some reason it just hit me. I had to abort and ever since then I've been paranoid to dive again. Being on a night dive didn't make it any better either. I've had opportunities to dive since then but Im just too scared as Im worried it will happen again.

I had heard of the issue with dental work and the problems of having an air bubble in a tooth filling but the dentist checked me out and said I didn't even have any fillings on that side of my mouth. He said it could be sinus related which I think is the case.
