Yup, when I pass the point of saving it, I pull my arms up over my chest forearms/elbows out, relax and bend the legs and hope for the best

Pretty much the way to do it.
Been racing mx for years. I always "tuck and roll" and haven't broken arms/wrists etc yet.
Shoulders take a beating though lol.
