Scammed by a Member

Wouldn't banning a known scammer be in the best interest of the website as well as the honest members that make up this website?

There is a much, much better alternative. More on this in a moment ...

It's a sketchy line to draw, there's always two sides to every story and I sure as hell wouldn't want to be the one that listened to both and had to determine which one gets kicked out.

OP could post his experience and let the other person respond (or not respond) and let community sentiment determine the outcome. In the past this has backfired on some members as they weren't nearly as innocent in the sketchy transaction as they felt.

BINGO.

Post the facts ... tell the truth ... let the chips fall where they may.

If there are repeated reports of incidents involving a particular person, and they are made public, and the facts of the cases stand up to scrutiny (which WILL happen) ... that is a far better method of outing a scammer than banning them - which would lead to them continuing their scamming activities by other methods.

Based on what evidence? I doubt GTAM has either the resources or desire to act as mediator between two aggrieved parties. I also doubt they want to make themselves responsible to any degree for the transactions that occur every day here. The classifieds section works best "as-is" with no assurances from the board.

Exactly.

If you look in the "reviews" section, and do some digging and searching, you can find out what businesses and people you want to deal with, and who you don't want to deal with.

If there is a consistent pattern of warnings and poor reviews for a certain business or member ... it's probably best to stay away.

But there have been many times that a forum member complains about a business or some other member, and the complaint has proven to be off base because of facts that were conveniently omitted, and the real problem was with the complainant themselves.

If there are 10 good reviews for 1 bad, or if numerous people come to the defense of the business being complained about ... then people can make their own decisions.

Its rare that a scammer just does their thing once, usually they run the same scam over and over again...

Yep ... so make the facts public.

Patiently waiting for the drama to unfold.

OP, I read the story you posted earlier before you deleted it.
Next time, if you're going to do business online, you're better off using Paypal than sending a money order to a random person you never met.

I also found it weird that the seller was in Maryland and nowhere near the GTA.
That alone would have raised some flags for me.

Even PayPal will rarely help you. Even your credit card company won't with certain transactions as long as the seller sent you SOMETHING. Visa literally told me that if I order something online and they seller sends me a box of rocks, there's nothing they can do. This is why I've started either dealing only in person or realizing that I might lose money.

Maybe its him... got suckered into smoking a pipe and got videotaped after a ride out with the boys...hahaha :D

I told you the thong was 'lightly used' before you bought it man.

No refunds!

Probably put it on backwards. It Happens.

RTFM!

Aside from the objections already stated, banning the offending account would just allow the scammer to return under a new name

but that new account won't have any credibility to it. i would think that a buyer would question a seller with a low post count and recent join date.

Same with the banks. Which is why they'll often give awkward comments like "Buying a car or something?" when withdrawing or drafting a certain amount of money.

I would rather they just ask "hey, what's this for? because if you're sending it to your long lost prince of a cousin, we won't cover your scammed ***".

Visa's responses are fair and correct. You authorized payment, they aren't at fault for your buying a ****** product or have lack of common sense.
