Scala G4, worth it?

(I'm not the OP, just been looking for a unit)
After reading all these comment it seems that people love what the scala does (intercom, bluetooth for mp3,cell), but specifically the unit seems to have some technical deficiencies or glitches. I decided to go with the units on deal extreme. they were $50 each after shipping. me and a buddy ordered 4. 2 for me (me+gf or sharing with a different buddy) and 2 for him. we'll see how it goes and if the knock off units are worth it but honestly if the $250 unit isn't drop dead perfect I see no reason to not get the $50 version instead.
in a few weeks when I get it I'll post up a review of the cheapo unit

The intercom works fine between two riders and the BT also works great when using your phone and having a clear conversation at 100+kms.
+1 - it was fine yesterday both aspects between the G4 and the my Rider2 = phone was excellent and the chatter between us good up to about 1/4 km - ( we were in twisties so stands to reason line of sight was hampered. )

I can't see using them for music ever....speakers are designed to voice so no range for music -

Maybe people should chase the Scala Rider 2 as they might be cheaper and I can highly recommend them....my one unit only failed due to my dumbass action.
Two years all weather - but phone and com only and the battery is incredible.
They are quick to buddy up IF there is no other BT in the area - something we learned the hard way.
Once buddied they are solid.

That's a decent deal - two for the price of a single G4

DX has some and the decent thing about DX is they actually have some reviews. This set reviewed well.

Shipping is free with DX and I've ordered a load of crap off of there. Quality is all over the place, but really, like you said, you can order three sets of these and still be well under a single G4 set.

EDIT: Noticed they have Fox clone back protectors. Somebody buy, crashtest, and review.

Thanks for the links! I order from DealExtreme all the time. Excellent service and delivery times considering there is no shipping costs (not even duty or taxes). Usually takes less than 2 weeks to get to me from HK.

But it's only $80 more for the proven Scala Rider 2....dual set
music is a selling feature for me, which neither of the scalas sound too good at. the DX unit can have any headset unit plugged in. is it great? not sure, but this thread has not made me think of the cardo units as 'proven' I am hearing a lot of complaints.
also 'only $80' more could also be worded as twice the price with less features.
quality is a feature but I'll only know after I get it. if it sucks, tough luck for me.

with the jacket liner I went all out and got the gerbings for twice the price of the tourmaster (150 for tour, 200+70controller for gerbings). some things I see as a good investment. liners will not advance much. with headset units the technology is changing too quickly to be worthwhile to spend $500 on a g4 dual set, the'll be a g5, n6, or whatever in probably a year and the q2 while good for you macDoc, doesn't do what I would want. therefore not on the table.

I see people complaining about the g4, while I had this thing since may and no issues.
As for sound, place the speakers properly.
Make sure you have the latest firmware update for g4.
Read the manual and understand the product.

Stop being cheap.

Stop being cheap.
feel free to send me $400 to make up the difference. also, the cheap ones may work just as well. I feel that may actually be the worry, not that I've wasted money, but maybe some other people have ;)
ha. I don't expect much from it truth be told.

right now if the scala is a 50% improvement that's not enough to warrent $400 extra to do the same thing. I have other things I could spend that on, like a heated build platform for my 3d printer or an upgraded print extruder. I love my bike but it's just one of many passions.

Good review - do like the button set up - have you ridden in the rain?
It's actually larger than the Scala 2 - smaller than the G4 tho a different shape.

Looks like good value.
Do the units stayed paired?

Hi, yes - I have ridden in several thunderstorms and downpours. (I ride daily rain or shine)

If you loose connection because your buddy is too far ahead or behind, the unit goes into search Mode and will reconnect when they get close enough. Myself and a friend have our units paired. We usually don't ride together during the work week, but If we meet up on weekends, all we do is turn one unit on and off and they connect easily because they have previously been paired .

One of the main features I love is the ease of use of the two buttons. Very simple and easy.
There is no fm radio, scala g4 has one, but with my iPhone I can stream radio or plug one in via a cable. Not a big deal.

Thanks - the FM is useless on the Scala - just a waste of a feature.
Which iPhone do you have - as voice dial is critical for me ( tho that's a tad OT )

I just got Scala G4 I cant get voice dial to work with my BB9700. Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

Personally I dont think I can live without mine. Everything works fine but they get really flaky when your synced up with other riders . . . .

ah, just saw your post... heres a reply, even if its a bit late..

I have used iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 on the Sena. The Voice dial works great. You also can use voice to control music.. ie "Play All Tracks by U2"
. BTW - Last year there was an accident and I was first on the scence. "Call 9 1 1 " worked and I was able to talk to dispatch while freeing the occupant from the car as both hand were free. The helmet was also great being on as it kept the airbag dust out!!

couple questions, I assume that only the scala's will talk to the scala's for the intercom fucntions, so you can't mix manufacturers and still hope to talk to your friends? The other thing, is the audio quality difference between the Q2 and the G4 due to the speakers? I ride with earbuds, so I was thinking about modding a headphone jack in lieu of the internal speakers so I can use my regular earbuds.

that is correct from what I know. Although BT technology is used, the encryption and connectivity is device/manufacturer specific.
