Scala G4, worth it?

Thanks for the replies guys.
Looks like I will have to order a set of G4's.
Maybe order after a few beers tonight.
That way is won't hurt until the visa bill comes in the mail.
cheers

Very handy indeed, not to mention if the mic happens to break or something, you can just replace that part now instead of the whole headset. I like that idea, since I'm relatively paranoid about leaving the headset/that part out in the rain when the helmet's locked to my bike sometimes...

True, they should have a little cover to get around the weather problem when you leave the helmet lock with the mick part installed.. not the device of course..

I've been using the Sena smh10 for the past few months. Way cheaper than the scala - we got a dual set for $300 !!
Works really well and very easy to use . I have been too lazy to write my review of it, but I'm going to soon ;)

Webbike world did a review on this and highly rated it.

One thing, you cant buy in Canada yet so we found a. Source in the US to buy from.

In my opinion it's the best bang for buck you're gonna get.

Had mine for a couple of weeks. A big improvement over my Midland. How do you find the Bluetooth performance? Mine's been flaky with my iPod Touch.

With the new iPhone software update 4.1, I can now skip tracks by pressing and holding vol. Up for 2 seconds. AVRCP feature fully supported now.
Loving the g4 more and more.

We just got back from a 4 day trip to the Adirondacks.
Our G4's were working fine before we left. (although we couldn't get the FM radio to work)
On first day the connection between the 2 headsets would start to get fuzzy and then cut out all together.
It got worse as our trip went on. They were being very picky. No what we wanted to be dealing with on our trip.
I will try and update the firmware, and see if that helps any.

I was impressed with the units when I first installed them, very clear and worked great.
Now, 1 month later. I am not so sure they were a good purchase.

The latest firmware addresses some issues with static/noise when the headsets are first turned on, I believe. I'm assuming you both had the antennas up and were within about a 1km range of each other? I find that once you start approaching a 1km distance (less actually), the headsets will tend to break up quite a bit. Does depend on the environment though, if there's a lot of cars etc around it's worse.

Hopefully the firmware update fixes everything up for you. One issue I'm continuing to have, is that the headset will occasionally "lock up" with my iPhone. It'll click as if I'd just received a text or something (since the sound doesn't play through the bluetooth connection the first time) but there was no such event... and usually once it does that a few times, the headset gets "stuck" with a faint static buzzing in the background until I reset it.

been following this becuase I was thinking of a scala... that doesn't sound good. I think you just made me want to hold off. not interested in getting a clicking in my ear halfway in a 3 hour ride.

Try Interphone F4. I've been using it for almost a year now without any problems.

my reason to go with scala over the interphone would be that a lot of people have the scala. I wish these could all communicate with eachother on the same protocol but they don't, so I feel that would be a waste even if the intercom works better I'd still be talking to myself unless I shell out $350-400.

for the people that have headsets what's your primary use? is it the intercom? or for many of you is it for music and calls?

I'm looking at some random ebay ones that are stereo+intercom and they're $50. if they have issues, well heck, apparently the $200 ones do as well, the differece is I can get 2 of these for $100...

there's tons on there including one that looks like an exact copy of the scala q2, but with stereo. again $50-60.

I like this one due to button size.

Understood. To say the truth, I rarely use it for B2B comm (paired with an old Interphone headset). Usually, it's cellphone, GPS and MP3.

DX has some and the decent thing about DX is they actually have some reviews. This set reviewed well.

Shipping is free with DX and I've ordered a load of crap off of there. Quality is all over the place, but really, like you said, you can order three sets of these and still be well under a single G4 set.

EDIT: Noticed they have Fox clone back protectors. Somebody buy, crashtest, and review.

My buddy orders stuff from there all the time for himself, he loves it. I've never tried but might. pretty big jump between the $50 one I'm looking at and the $100 one you linked to, but like you said, reviews matter.
worst case with the $50 ebay ones is the intercom blows but the bluetooth will still function. from a geek view there's not many BT chipsets out there so they all pretty much use the same stuff.

just not sure if I want to have the hassle of charging my helmet before I ride. there's something to be said for cables.

EDIT. oh! it's a 2 set pack! so it's still 50 each AND positive reviews..... hmmmmmm.....

I have the scala rider and when I ride its with 3 of us using them. one of the riders just got a I4 phone and noticed he gets static once and a while, he has the curent updqted software version. It really isn't the end of the world, you just hvae to turn it off and turn it back on maybe once or twice in a long 4-5 hour ride.

Its a new unit and needs its bugs worked out, so far the paring works great. I have 3 people with them we all pair them in 3 way mode. I noticed sinse one of the people we ride with has a I4 phone it does static up his side, I also noticed mine and the other person statics up also, not sure if its related to the pairing of the units or not, but I did notice the last ride I got static 2-3 times in a 6 hour ride. It really isn't that much of a hassel just hear crackling but everything is still understandable.

All you need to do to stop the static is turn off the unit, and wait like 5 seconds and turn them back on for the static to go away, you might not get it again the rest of the ride. So far i'm not sure if the range gets weaker with 3 riders, or if rider 2 batter gets used more sinse he is paired with 2 other people. What I think is that the range for all 3 is depended on the farthest distance between either rider.

I wish Scala Would let us know more about the ranges and batteries and how they work.

Other then that great units and don't regreat ever getting them, all we know is the firmware updates will help these unites even more down the road and we also know the scala rider 2 unites lasted for years and was great, these G4 units are even better.
