Scala G4, worth it?

I was thinking on getting a Scala G4, the reviews around are very interesting, its a bit $$-high I know, but I figure invest now will make good use of it.

Any comments? yes/no :confused1:

I run a Scala G4 and have 2 Q2's in my household... The G4 is worth the upgrade for the sound quality alone. Stereo bluetooth connectivity for Ipod touch's/phones etc is nice. Radio works well. Phone calls sound like I am at home when on the highway up to 140km/h. I had a few issues with the connectivity between my headset and my wifes Q2, it would connect to talk and not disconnect but this was fixed with the software upgrade that was released awhile ago. Shop around, I paid $40 more for my G4 than the wifes Q2.

My dad has one and loves it!

Im curious about this too..

could I say talk to another rider that has one on the fly ? or would you have to both agree and pair them up if you catch my drift ?

I'd like the ability to talk to dam near anyone with a scala G4?

Or should I stick to a GMfRS type setup ?

All you have to do to connect to another G4 is hold down 1 of the 2 channel buttons on the face of the unit for about 7 seconds on each one and they will automatically bind if in range (1 mile). Up to 4 riders can talk at once with the G4, but its not like radio where anyone in range can just join in. You can talk to anyone with any type of bluetooth headset, over cell phone.

One feature I like is that I can receive a phone call and invite my wifes Q2 to join in the convo- convenient for making plans.

So for the noob that I am this would be a good investment in the long run :drunken:

If you don't have that much cash to spare, buy a Q2 instead of the G4.

I bought a Scala Rider Q2 Multiset from Radio World (off the 400 somewhere, multiset comes with 2 headsets) for $350 no tax. It's almost as good as the G4, and I mean, it has FM radio, so the MP3 track control isn't that big of a deal.

500M range, and great for talking to my gf when riding 2up, makes the rides much more interesting, love being able to take and place phone calls while riding as well.

I agree with Zaneris, if you just cant afford the G4 go with the Q2... but the sound quality alone is worth the upgrade for me (I have used both), Mp3's do not sound great with the Q2... the G4 sounds comparable to earbuds with a little less bass response but great treble... not to mention the greater range and many other features. And downloadable software upgrades with the included USB cable.

As for multiple uses, you can have a cellphone, GPS and Mp3 player hooked up all at once, and talk to another Scala unit. There is built in priorities for each function, ie, phone calls trump radioplay etc. automatically it will switch back to the last function after the call/intercom convo ends.

I said it b4, and gonna say it again, only get the G4, why settle for less.

Please Q2 people don't think I'm hating or bashing, just prefer more options.

Anyways I got that G4, and can't, won't ride without it, love music too much.
Oh and I look cooler having a blue light flash on my helmet, people know it's Bluetooth, and think I'm the coolest rider, and I reply with " I know ".

I have an htc hero, and my main reason to maybe get the G4, is to use the "Navigate" function on the phone and know where I'm going.. oh yes and maybe take some calls...

I thought about the Q2, but then I was like, soon I might want to upgrade, based on features. I don't have a spare helmet and was not thinking of getting one this season, so really, second person no need at this point.

So I am thinking to make investment on the G4.

Do you (or anyone else) remember how much the G4 and the Q2 are worth?

I will be posting my review on the sena smh10 soon, but webbikeworld has a review too. These are amazing BT headsets that work amazing at 130km and allow voice control of iPhone !
Very easy to use with the job dial!

Dude on kijiji selling a Q2, he got G4.

I got G4 set(2) on kijiji brand new for $425.

I paid $380 tax in @ Royal for the 2X Q2 and $239 for the G4 @ Kahuna:) They had a Ebay deal on, called and talked to the owner and he matched the price for me. Box had a Kahuna sticker for 399 on it:eek:

I think for the Q2 multiset you can now probably get them for under $260. I wouldn't bother paying the extra $200 for the G4s when the Q2s do their job well. The girlfriend and I use ours all the time and we aren't planning on ever upgrading, but we're also on a different budget than many.

PS: on the highway we use earplugs and just turn up the volume on the scalas

Two of us have two Q2 sets and very pleased once synched tho as the reviews mentioned they can be annoying.

A tip with these and other devices...turn off any other BT devices in range when synching.

I find hooking in the cell phone and using voice dial just fine with my Motorola 815 - I wear a light helmet liner/balaclava and tuck the mike into the front to cut wind interference...but I talk to staff and clients regularly on them.
Two years and happy - don't see enough benefit to go to the G4.

BTW I use Ultimate Ears with my iPod Touch - they fit inside the helmet - excellent sound control and top notch music.
I can still hear the Scala ( the UE ones I bought have the stop/start/skip button on them. ) when the volume is up full so great sound, terrific noise suppression and still communication with riding buddy and via cell phone.

Took a while to find the right combo
Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5vi were the finally piece of the puzzle as the sound quality is superb yet I can still hear.
Dropping the ambient noise 70-80% is bliss.
There is still some low buffeting but it's WAAAAAAY better.
I can't see the Scala's providing anywhere near the sound quality so I think the combo is better as well gives the "earplug"

I love my G4.
With hi quality earplugs in, I can still hear my music crips and clear at 85+ mph in my Scorpion helmet.
My buddy has his in a KBC helmet and loves his as well.
Last weekend we both used ours in PA, and had some points where we were well out of sight of eachother ( at least 1/4 mile or more) in mountais and twisties thru forests and could still communicate.

Something to keep in mind is that the bluetooth function drastically cuts down battery life. I had the phone cord run from my ipod to the G4 and it lasted from 10am till 1130 pm and still the low battery red light wasn't flashing yet.
My buddy was bluetoothing music from his Blackberry and his died by 4 pm.
He charged it again while we stopped for a half hr fro supper, and rode the rest of the way home with no bluetooth and his 30 minute charge easily made it the 3 hr ride home.

I had a group buy going on these back in the winter from Bluestreakracing.ca.

We got them $250 CDN shipping and taxes in. I love mine so much that I now need to buy another for my wife!

As soon as G5 comes out I'm upgrading for sure, I love new.
