Samsung doing something about distracted driving.

I will never understand how God damn hard it is for people to just put their phone down while they drive. I know in my first year of driving it was a huge problem for me but I realized it wasn't worth it shortly after. Last year when I was by the bus stop I counted all the cars who were Texting and driving and almost everyone on my street had their head staring between their legs. It truly is an epidemic.

The Samsung s4 has a hands free mode which is specifically used for driving so it's weird that they'd release this. Maybe the hands free mode works in sync with the mount or something. Definitely a step in the right direction hopefully it's affordable and the price is appealing to young people or else which inconsiderate, selfish teen without a care of the people around them is going to want to buy it. In the end that's what it comes down to. Some of the kids my age just don't realize the damage they could do to their or someone else's family - - it's an issue with their character, so something like this could appeal to the responsible drivers but for those who just don't give a **** I doubt they'll be interested.

Great step, hell if it came to Canada I'd get it for the free stuff lol. I'd have subways in no time since I'm responsible when it comes to that area

I second what boots said. Nothing is so important you can't put the damn mobile down. That's a great ad by vw. Entitled people need to realize by their unimportant text they could kill or seriously injure someone. The 401 and downtown is the worst for this that I've seen in recent times.

I'm guilty of doing this. I don't know why. When I realize I put it down but it's a stupid habit I need to stop.

That product is ********. People who want to play with their phone aren't going to use it. People who would buy it are the ones who don't play with their phone anyway.

As far as texting and driving, we need some serious legislation and enforcement. The fine is a slap on the wrist, and you're never going to get caught anyway because police barely enforce it. When they are, they're handing out tickets it's at red lights where people's cars aren't even moving. They should be pulling people over on the highway, giving them massive fines, and taking their licences for multiple infractions.

Unfortunately I think the only way this problem will be solved is with self driving cars, which are still a way off.

Yiu know what I also think contributes to this epidemic? The fact that cars are becoming so much more automated and cater to the innattentive drivers. Blindspot sensors, reverse cameras, automatic parking etc etc etc. Hell even automatic transmission. All of this engraining the idea of lazy vehicular control into the minds of the population. Don't get me wrong some of that can be helpful and I do know a couple friends who drive stick few of which use their phone and drive, but for the most part, all these things makes going on your phone whilst driving as tempting and easy as going on your phone whilst riding the bus.

No one's engaged with the road anymore and it shows.

Definitely. I hear commercials for the new Toyotas all the time on the radio. It will stop for you if it thinks you're going to hit something, and alert you when you're veering out of your lane.

Here's an idea: if you can't keep your vehicle between the lines and not smash into things, GET THE **** OFF THE ROAD! Instead of alerting the driver, it should alert the police that someone is incapable of driving.

That is truly terrifying.

That is actually effin' brilliant. Sort of a breathalyser interlock but for stupidity and inattentiveness instead of BAC.

Exactly, it needs to give you points and it needs to be enforced. People will not continue to do it when they know their insurance will eventually drop them. I emailed the Liberals about this to get their stance on it pre-election, and of course I didn't hear a peep.

from what I understand those people are all neurosurgeons on emergency call giving life saving instructions....or Shirley calling her BFF to talk about Brad drinking a pumpkin spice latte with Chad and Courtney.

I agree.

I just bought a new (to me) truck. It is a 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 and it doesn't have any of that crap. I had a Ford Flex as a rental car a few months back and I absolutely hated it, it took me a while to figure out how to change the dash (which is a big LCD screen) to just show vehicle instrumentation.

My new truck has no Bluetooth, no blind spot warning, no back up sensors or camera (although the camera would be handy sometimes when hooking up the trailer), no auto parking system, no lane departure warning, the dash is just the standard 6 gauges and the radio is just a radio. It's exactly what I want. I did set the headlights to "auto" though.. so maybe I'm a big ninnny.

I never even used cruise control.. all that crap also puts drivers to sleep..

Same here have a car never used the cruise control, I may be wrong but all the car gadjets are likely to give cagers a false sense of security,
and their brains go into lazy pilot control.. I for one sure the heck would not trust gadjets over confirming a problem myself.

Though obviously some technology is good..

ps off topic, how come I don't see preview icon box, sometimes do? werd or what

the horse has left the barn, the barn has burned down, the horse was struck down and killed by a distracted driver texting

I've managed to avoid rush hour with my past jobs but failed to do so this year. The amount of crappy drivers (braking way too much to corner, not seeing pedestrians crossing the road, not signalling, etc.) made me rage for the first 2 weeks. I've become a lot more calm now but there has been more than one time the thought of dragging the driver out and curb stomping them was in my head.

If it so important to use your phone while you drive at the very least install some bluetooth people. I put a little sony head unit in my car paired with an s4 and it reads me txt, I can txt back by speech, make receive calls, and mp3 all while the phone is in my pocket. Cost under $200 and installed it myself.
