Safety Certificate

I wasn't aware that there were any issues with Ted giving safety certificates, he did mine mid-march. Did something happen between then and now?
The MTO found out he was going to peoples houses and writing safety certs and "failed to renew" his certification license.

EDIT: Good news he's all back up and running Stewart :)

Well, I was there on Saturday and he certified my new scooter.
To me, Ted is the best. I have never had a problem with him and always got good service at a great price. Yeah, I know some people won't agree but he is the man to go. At least for a safety certification, no one else can compete with him.

If he's a certified mechanic willing to come to my house and give me a legal safety certificate for my bike, in my own garage, why not?

Because there is no such thing. A certificate issued at your residence will be enough for you to get what you need (registration with the MTO), but there is nothing legal about its issuance.

Hence, the constant badgering to just take it to a shop.

Follow up:

I called the guy last night.
Me: "So, you come to my house and do a safety check on my bike?"
Him: "yup"
Me: "Is that legal"
Him: "I don't see why not" (First red flag!)
Me: "Are you a licenced mechanic"
Him: "Um, no but I sell a lot of bike parts and I work with a mechanic......." (Giant red banner!)
At this point I zoned out, told him I'd call him back if I needed him.
Now waiting for the weather to clear to take it to the shop.

So in answer to my original question......!

I thought you had to be licensed to issue a certificate.

I need to get my bike safetied. There's a guy on Kijiji that advertises that he comes to you for $100.00.
Has anyone here used this guy?
Is this legal?
I'll gladly pay $100.00 for the convenience.

I'm not going to bother reading the other replies because I already know what's been said. If you someone hasn't said it already, this is an illegal service.

Contact Ken - kneedragger88 on the forum. He will pick up your bike at your convenience and do the safety at his shop then return it. I believe the transport is free. Great guy to deal with, very knowledgeable, fair prices.

Are you sure?

It's been a long time but I didn't think he did certifications at his shop. Last time it was farmed to Clarington cycle if I recall correctly
