They have picked a new name for Ryerson University.... it is now Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). Seems like a lame name to me, it rings like one of those weird online only schools or one of those private career colleges....

I half expected them to rename it Egerton University :( , although the dudes actual first name was Adolphus, that should have been a sign???? but I was really holding out to naming it after our former mayor.... The Sweaty Bob University of Higher Learning and Stuff, SBUHLS, or just SBU for short (maybe the full name was too long).

They missed an opportunity…should have been “Central University of the North,Toronto“ and they should have spent millions on abbreviated logo leisurewear to market.

Like the Saskatchewan Higher Institute of Technology.

Kinda agree the name seems so generic. I guess it had to be so not associated with some historical stink, or otherwise, and be welcoming inclusive to all.

I'm still appalled they bothered . Tired of cancel culture.

name anything after anyone and 200yrs into the future they will have been a racist, homophobe , pedophile or a comedian . Because that will also be a crime in the future.

I understand the reason behind it, but I'm also very aware that none of my friends that went there knew anything about the namesake. The whole topic of the fella was pretty dead... Like the fella.

We improve our world by remembering the past, changing the present, and leaving a better future (or something less preachy-sounding).

I struggle to see how this achieved that. The amount of money and effort poured into it could have gone elsewhere.

That being said, I'm not a member of the affected demographic...

I’ve had multiple arguments with friends that went there with me.

Some are for the change, and adamantly that we need to not honour the names of the past (kind of agree).

My view is we can’t judge the past by todays standards.

I even said that most us white folk would probably just as racist as the rest of them back then…my buddy had the nuts to say ‘I wouldn’t! I know I wouldn’t! I’m not racist now so I wouldn’t be a racist back then’

I laughed and I laughed.

Waste of money IMO. I hope they don’t change the streets, or town named after him.

I'm of similar opinion, kinda like burning a history book because you don't like what happened in a different time and different world... and don't want others to know.

I also get that the indigineous groups have a stake and I respect year perspective.

I wouldn't name a new school after Ryerson but I'm not sure I'd 'burn the book' and cancel an existing school.

I don't think its like burning a history book at all. I doubt many people learn about history by looking at his statue or the name of the university

People who want to learn about Ryerson can read a book (they haven't been burned) or google it. No one is erasing him from history, we just aren't honouring him anymore. That's it, no need to stick your neck out for this guy's legacy

TMU is as vanilla a name as possible. But the people tasked with renaming it had an unenviable job

This is my opinion, as someone who has the Ryerson name on 2 of my degrees

Toronto Institute of Technology and Science.

Toronto Institute of Technology and Science.
Should we add French to it, to not be prejudiced? Toronto Institute of Technology & Science - Université Polytechnique

We used to be Ryerson Polytechnic University. I've worked there through two name changes and two logo changes. Finally threw out all the work shirts that I couldn't wear anymore, with the old logo, last year.

It was Ryerson Polytechnic(al?) Institute when I was of that age. I did a construction job there once.
