Is it true, when a motorcycle runs from the cops, the cop isn't allowed to chase - in general/over a certain speed?

I heard if the cop(s) chase and the rider goes down, gets injured or dies, they are held accountable. Dose this sound right?

Just wondering...

This is what I read to everyone who asks this extremely stupid and completely asinine question

Criminal Code -
25(4) A peace officer, and every person lawfully assisting the peace officer, is justified in using force that is intended or is likely to cause death or grievous bodily harm to a person to be arrested, if
  • (a) the peace officer is proceeding lawfully to arrest, with or without warrant, the person to be arrested;
  • (b) the offence for which the person is to be arrested is one for which that person may be arrested without warrant;
  • (c) the person to be arrested takes flight to avoid arrest;
  • (d) the peace officer or other person using the force believes on reasonable grounds that the force is necessary for the purpose of protecting the peace officer, the person lawfully assisting the peace officer or any other person from imminent or future death or grievous bodily harm; and
  • (e) the flight cannot be prevented by reasonable means in a less violent manner.
There is gonna be a smartass who is going to pipe up and say that speeding isn't one of those offences.. to which I say ( if that cop by chance just got a call of a home invasion nearby and you fit that discription... you are road pizza)

The question is.... can you outrun the Motorola?

Not even Spring time and these questions are popping up.

lol, someone forgot to tell the last one I came across, keep on believing buddy

..and to respond to guy on top of me, if cops gave a **** about the public's opinions, they wouldn't do half the **** they do (i.e. G20)

I remember years ago when some guy was being chased and exited onto Dixon Rd and cut himself in half with the road sign in the median of Dixon Rd. There was a big uproar about that and I believe there is some leeway in chasing bikes. I should think it'd have to be a good reason before they started a serious high-speed chase..

The only thing worse than the question are the responses that perpetuate this myth and the extremely bad idea that this is.

Would you care to try to out run a helicopter?

The real question is:

Are those Motorola radios at a Tim Hortons within intercept range?

When a Police officer turns on his lights and siren. Your legal job is to pull over and identify yourself.

Absolutely correct. Although..I'm not sure he was asking if it's a good idea to run or what he should do in the event the police are asking him to pull over..

Running is a bad idea. But sometimes bad laws, enforced by bad people, give us bad ideas.

Remember, 400 series highways are patrolled by the OPP, including Toronto, and are we just talking about the centre of the universe again.....

Toronto doesn't own any choppers. They would have to be called in from most likely another region, which by then the rider will be long gone.
