Royal Enfield 650 not so affordable?

You're buying retro styling with modern technology.
The only fair comparisons are the Triumph Street Twin and the Kawasaki W800, both of which are going to be at least $2,000ish more OTD for not a whole bunch more power.
Whatever blows your hair back and your wallet can bear.
i guess so. i think that applies to say..the ducati scrambler (which is what my bike is now). so i know full well that i'm paying a premium for the ducati brand and scrambler/retro styling, even when the bike itself has a generally modest output as well.

but royal enfield is supposed to be on the opposite of that world and they themselves keep touting how affordable the bike is. so thats what throws me off i guess.

if you know guitars, i see RE as the 'squier' of instruments. still very decent quality workhorse guitars that just dont have the full fender branding/allure (especially outside of india). so its weird to me if i ever see a squier being priced like a fender. maybe im off about that but thats how it feels to me.

honestly i should just shut up and buy the bike haha. im guessing you love yours? which colour did you get?

A W800 makes 46.23 rear wheel hp, the Triumph Street Twin (900cc) makes 60.6, the RE makes 42.2, all as measured on the Cycle World magazine dyno. Based on displacement I'd say the RE is holding its own, wouldn't you ?
I was using his numbers of street twin at 65 and RE at 47. I was also looking at hp/dollar not hp/cc. The specific output of all of them is pretty low (and not much different between them) which is ok. They arent supposed to be rockets.

Not that its got anything really to do with this thread, but my insurance went DOWN $7 a year from my KLR. Go figure ?

yep i read that one too. and watched a ton of youtube reviews haha. fortnine has a good video on it too. im about 75% convinced. just wish i could see the bikes in person first. OVC is closer to me and they basically are out of stock but expecting some in may.

this would have my mega bucks.

@iblastoff check out Itchy Boots on YouTube...she did 3 seasons IIRC on her Himalayan going around the world...quite a few guys use that bike for RTW trips...I too was looking at one up in Acton a couple of summers ago just for ***** and giggles...

so yah i got an OTD price for a new triumph street twin and it was 12,960. its also 900cc and 65hp. so basically what i said (1-2k more). its definitely more expensive but rightly so since its basically in the next tier of bikes in terms of power output.

the RE650 is closer to the 500-700cc tier of bikes. and honestly probably on the lower end since its only 47hp. for $11,000'ish OTD that still seems like a lot. ahh well. i'm still considering one but the enthusiasm is a bit dampened now. i really dont mind its modest power output but i wish it was priced more accordingly.
I like retro looks but I get the impression the resale market isn't great. If that's the case, the thing that gets to me is the difference in what I pay for something and what I get for it when I sell. Depreciation on an unpopular vehicle is a killer.

yah thats valid i think. i know these 650s so far are looking pretty good, but royal enfield as a brand still has a way to go in earning peoples trust. which is why i think they should be cheaper OTD...

when i sold my Suzuki TU250x i got a great return on it (probably because its one of the few modern retro beginner bikes you can get). i know exactly how much i can sell my ducati scrambler for as well.

i don't know what i can recoup on an $10-11,000 royal enfield tbh. but then again it could be a lifer bike!

my other issue is i want this bike but i dont want to sell my current bike haha. toronto insurance is the worst.

R E really has some work ahead of them to get around the mindset the quality is a bit lacking , Like the Hyundia pony when it showed up here , the 'damage' done by the quality of the 350's and early 500's will take a while.
I can remember a tie when buying a Duc was a passion project, resale was awful or impossible , it got better.

I don't know the financial positions of the R.E. dealers and their service options. Service will differ with the different types of bikes. With a tourer you need to know if there are parts / service in Gimli Manitoba. Sport bikes and cruisers, is there service available near a Timmies.

Is there a Royal Enfield Canada or are the dealers bringing the bikes in on their own? Canadian parts inventory? Tech support? It isn't unlike the Ural market.

A full service dealership will have a ton of parts in stock plus a parts guy to take care of them. Are there enough R.E's around to justify the costs?

Royal Enfield North America (much like Triumph) runs the show. Parts come out of Texas, machines (I think) are drop shipped directly to the dealers. My experience so far is all good, they are simple bikes to work on with a 3 year warranty and roadside assistance.
The INT650 and Continental GT are identical mechanically, the only differences are handlebars, seat, tank and footrests.
Only 3 dealers in all of southern Ontario isn't great, but how many are there for MV or Guzzi ?
I already downloaded a parts list and complete factory service manual so I'm pretty much good to go. The dealer has been very helpful.
I think that going forward with the Himalayan, Meteor and 650s in the mix you will see things grow.

wasn't Fada Scooters a royal enfield dealer in toronto? i remember talking to them years ago and they were excited about the 650. i don't know if they're fully gone now or just not RE dealers anymore.

at least royal enfield aren't norton...

Not a dealer anymore. I think they still work on the older singles and scooters ?
Drove by there about a month ago, there were some used bikes in the window.

I had my Sym Mio 50 scooter serviced by them last year, after having it sit in my garage for 5+ years.

If anybody thinking about a scooter, get anything but a Sym. Dealer and service feedback has been that the manufacturer sucks and leaves the dealers/service guys to fend on their own (e.g. no support)
