Rogers are truly a scummy company

My mother in law lives in Toronto.

She is 80 years old, does not have internet and the only services she has is Basic Cable from Rogers and her phone from Bell. TV is probably one of her only pleasures in life at the moment

Given her age she can be somewhat confused so when Rogers stopped sending out paper bills a few months ago she didn't pay them. Unless that paper is sitting right in front of her she won't remember. They just stopped sending them without notification.

Anyway, fast forward to this week when she gets a call from Rogers threatening to cut off her service and turn the account over to a collections agency. They were apparently pretty nasty about it and left her in tears.

I had to call, and they wouldn't speak to me so eventually I got my wife to phone back to answer questions about here birth date, postal code, etc., so I guess they assumed it was her and then she passed the phone over to me.

So basically they informed me that "being on line is a prerequisite to doing any business with Rogers". She would have to pay all the outstanding costs + interest and that if she wanted a paper bill in the future that would be $25 for each copy. They also said that her bills were sent to her email address, which is strange because she does not have an email address. When I asked what email address they were sent to they said that for privacy reasons they couldn't tell me. Bull **** lies

What sort of Piece of **** Low-life Scum does that to an 80 year old woman.

If it were me, fine. I'd still be ****** but could get my invoice on line, but you really can't expect an old person to deal with this.

Anyway, she only watches CBC, CTV, City, etc., so I've already ordered a HD Antenna and will see if I can get a friend to install it for her.

**** You Ted Rogers... **** You

Yeah they are.

They buried some plan change in the middle of my invoice (super small font, no bold, nadda) so i missed it as i typically only glance at the amount due and let it process on a CC.

Few months later i'm getting calls that i'm past due $600 in data overages. I went back and found this nonsense on my invoice. Called their customer serviced, got transferred direct to management (i never deal with tier 1s as they are beyond useless). I explained that such changes to my plan should be sent via email/voicemail, something other then burying it in no mans land on an invoice which likely almost no one is reading word for word.. He agreed it was pretty UN obvious and they asked for $50 to clear the account.

When i asked why the overage wasn't showing on the following bills he couldn't explain it.

I paid it and moved on.

I was on the board at a charity. We were putting internet into hostels.
Ted Rogers was on the board.
I already had a lan throughout a well known hostel in Toronto.
No sweat, give me a decent connection and I'll proxy out into each room.
NOPE.
Ted INSISTS I run coax throughout the building so that each room has their own modem, that way Rogers Inc. get tax write off for each of those connections, at HIGHLY inflated commercial rates.
I do all the work, and Ted MAKES money... off a CHARITY.
I got to tell Ted Rogers to go screw his hat, personally, to his face. One of my life's high lights.

Yup totally scum and fraudulent company. I use to be all in with them TV, Internet, Cell. Slowly I moved away each service from them and life has been so much better. Every month there was some kinda fuckery with each of the bills, and every month going over each bill and having to call in and have them correct it. Now I don't have those issues.

When I ditched cable TV I went to Antenna. Lately it hasn't been working too well. I've heard some rumblings of Cell tower interference. I have to look into it. But otherwise you will get all the channels she watches, plus some from Buffalo if you angle it just right.
Check out Save and Replay for Antennas. The cost of the Antenna was worth just a bit more then 1 month of Rogers, so the return of investment is quick.

Never liked dealing with them, and I'm not sure if anyone else is all that much better. I just prepare myself with a beer/whiskey in hand when it's time to call and renew my contract, and take my calm pills before the call.

We don't have cable tv, but our antenna is effectively useless so far from the lake now. But the cable box, netflix, and amazon prime make up for it.

Bell isn't any better, I spent a month getting a phone set up for my 96 year old father who's in a long term care facility.
You would have thought I was asking for a kidney - four trips to the Bell store, numerous phone calls.
I finally lost it on one of the tech people, telling her I hoped this call was being recorded for posterity because everything she'd just told me was bullsh*t.
Free market telecom is the answer, but just like motor vehicle insurance no one in government has the stones.

Half the reason i refuse to speak to Tier 1s.

My Rogers small business account is currently 6GB month + $10 for each 2GB (or portion thereof) that I go over. It scales every month and works well. In september that contract expires and I get automatically placed on 500 MB per month plus $20 per GB for a much higher monthly fee. F you Rogers.

That's easy to say, but what are the options? Crooked Bell? Subsidiaries of Rogers or Bell? It is quickly getting to the point that it may be cheaper to go with a US company and pay for roaming.

i have not had cable in over 20yrs, my HD antenna gets me close to 15 or so channels. for phone i'm with freedom and so far they have treated me well

We're in Rural Ontario so only choice was Bell, worst customer service ever. I've had them cancel our TV without confirmation, countless increases in bills, and I have to spend over 2hrs on hold to talk to someone to get it fixed everytime during my work day. Best part is every time, someone 'promises' it wont happen again and then a few months later... I've gotten a direct line and extension to someone in customer service but that line never works either.
Xplornet has some good options right now but from what i've heard they arent much better either.

You may have a case to send something to the ombudsman.....use the email address argument and ask them to provide the address. It doesn’t exist so that’s a blatant lie on their part. Actually, the more I think about this the more solid your case is.

My parents are very grumpy with Xplornet for many reasons and tried hard to dump them. No other options in their area so they are stuck with them.

one other thing, you can register to act as a proxy with Rogers on your mother's behalf. I did this for my wife to arrange her mobile services with them.

Ombudsman needs the power to issues six+ figure penalties and release full details of every case to the media (with complainants permission). This is another situation where Rogers has very very little to lose in operating without ethics.

I wonder how Telcos like Cogeco, Telus and Shaw hold up in other provinces.
Here in ON, I think Rogers / Bell hold a lions share of the market.

I can't stand bell and I have not had any dealings with Rogers. I follow a group called Open Media who are constantly keeping an eye on the telecom giants and petitioning the government for more fairness and service to the public. If you can support them it may help us all in the end.
OP you may want to let CTV consumer alert know about this. They may pick it up and fight on your behalf;
I am with the antennae group; we are in Niagara and get good reception and a good number of stations for what i want. Otherwise netflix fills in the gaps. Our internet is with NWIC and although more money works far better than using the bell line;
If you can find a service in your area like this it is the way to go. My brother had explornet and he was never happy with it.
So far I have been with Telus for my cell phones for like 30 years and have had good luck with them . I just wish we could have the rates they pay in the US. It is so much cheaper there.

Everytime I have an issue with fido or rogers i NEVER take it up with the low level reps. I demand the manager. If i get the slightest tone from the manager that its not going in the right direction i demand and request the office of the president calls me. At this point their tone will either change in your favor or chances r high office of the president will resolve in ure favor. Just remember to repeat one thing “i’m going to take ure scamming company to small claims court, CRTC and media”. Helps a ******** to log down each person’s name u speak with, date, and time. When u get the manager or office of the president repeat to them on this day and this time i spoke with so and so from x-department... theh know u mean business right away.

Another sure way tothe attention of and a call from their office of the president is file a complaint on BBB, note names, dates, times, etc and demand their office calls u or u r suing them court. Never failed. Their objective is to remove that blemish from bbb

Presently in a snit with Virgin. I paid my bill through the bank and fund out later they only entered 13 of the 14 digit account number. Banks fault but Virgin kept pestering me. I'm just the monkey in the middle. Canada Trust has been looking for the missed payment for over a month and I've told them where to look.

Bell: I wish I kept the records of their total screw up with my business numbers. It got so bad the supervisor at Bell gave me her personal email address. When I used it I got a "Not regularly checked" message.

Before HST I got got a bill for one cent on an account closing. It only worked out if the piggy backed PST on top of HST.

Rogers: Friend had a cheque bounce because Rogers took a payment early.

I'm sure Rogers is a super scummy company, I have zero doubts about that. My personal experience, they've been just fine.

I get gigabit internet for ~$70/month. Speed is consistent and fast, maybe goes down a few times a year for no more than 30 minutes. I send them a message on Facebook once a year to reup my discount. Zero fuss
