Seriously? If he's driving a Maserati and complains about the cost of ownership of a motorcycle, then it must be mommy and daddy that bought him the car. Lol....... Man, I had to save up for 2 years before I bought my first car. Kids these days. :happy8:

I think i remember a thread where the OP was having a hard time deciding on what car to buy last year? On the list were cars that I can only dream of owning. Don't remember if mom and dad were banking that but....first world problems here! LoL

OP if you lost the joy of riding its simple...stop riding!

and to whoever mentioned that people that don't ride have boring and meaningless lives....grow up....there's more to life than motorcycles. Just because they're the end all be all to you doesn't mean we all feel the same. I enjoy riding but to me it's no more than a hobby I enjoy to fill my time with. Same as snowboarding, going for a drive with my wife, or spending time with friends.

i vote that this thread is lame, and out of place here. obviously riding is worth it. other answers banish you to the ancient lands of fire and bikelessness.

This is a troll thread.
OP has a Maserati and Ducati. Or maybe he just have really bad financial planning

Jeez, now I'm really depressed, according to my spreadsheet, having sex doesn't make financial sense either :(
Those 45 seconds can't be that expensive

Last year I hit a dear on my bike. $2200, got 6800 from insurance, bought another bike for 4g, insurance cost $800 for the year. Looks like I made money.

I scratch my head and wonder, and then it occurs to me that I ride an enduro. So that's automatically cheaper? Good for me. I ride enduro because I like the style. Appeals to my "ride it like I stole it" frame of mind.

My operating costs are no more than what I save on ttc fare for the months I happily don't have to take it. But even if it didn't, the feeling I get on my bike would be worth whatever the cost.

Because someone does not ride or does not enjoy it anymore does not mean life will be mundane. A pretty narrow view of how life can be exciting and enjoyable....

To paraphrase Steve McQueen, "Riding, (he said racing) is life. Everything else is just waiting."

Life will surely be more mundane if one doesn't ride. That's not so much a "narrow view" as opposed to a credo, or a philosophy of what's important in one's life. If one is not as passionate as another about his time in the saddle, that does not make him a a more complete person in terms of interests or priorities. Just less committed to one.

If the o/p even has to ask this question, he's not a "resident" motorcyclist, but rather a "visitor" to the life style.

If he, or you or anybody else for that matter can think of a better way to send your time and money than riding a motorcycle, then don't think riders like me are narrow because other than having sex, riding my bike is pretty much what I prefer to do as much as I can.

Vacations end after a short while and leave you with memories and pictures, TV's burn out, stereos and other games and tech become obsolete in short order, women are never satisfied, you golf on somebody schedule not yours, you only rent booze, dogs die, etc and so on with any other number of alternatives that simply don't deliver the joy for dollar/time investment that riding does...for those who love it and are committed to the life style that is: residents, not visitors.

op...sell your bike, or commit. Because not going "all in" with motorcycling, will avail you little joy, regardless of how little you spend. I'm sure you'll easily find less exciting things not to spend your money on. :)

Oh, OK, to answer;

How much do you budget annually for your bike?

  • Parking

I don't budget for riding, other than for insurance. Costs come up, they get paid, I find a way to make it happen; refer to the top of my post for the reason.

But to put average numbers up for you;

KTM Superduke
~6000 kms/year
Insurance: $988/year
Maintenance: as required, and I do all of my own work (which improves my enjoyment of the hobby so, again, priceless)
Depreciation: I don't care, it's the bike I want (that said, I NEVER buy new)
Other (gear): I run 2 sets of gear; dedicated riding gear and street gear for commuting/errands/scooting around, replaced as required. This year I've spent $500. As for extra parts/tools, etc... that aren't maintenance parts, this year I'm up to a whopping $100... so far
Parking: when I ride the bike I save on parking; is free for bikes at work and most often I can find a place to stick the bike to avoid costs

Everyone has different income so its hard to use someone that has less or more money then me to judge, that being said I once paid $8000 one year for insurance...That is more then most people are willing to pay for their bike, insurance, and gas for the year....Was it worth it, for me yes, being one of my early riding years I probably had more fun then then I do now....And I also only had a motorcycle lic, so it was the bike or the bus

I've only rode for 2yrs, but I think about it too. For a hobby, it's not bad for now, I've spent $1-2k golfing for a few years, then probably similar amount doing airsoft before that, so spending ~$2k a year on riding isn't too extravagant. But for the next jump, going into a bigger bike, insurance more than doubles from $850 to $1800-2000(for a FZ6, SV650, etc), gas will cost more too, and it's suddenly looking to be more like a $3-4k budget. Is it worth it, maybe, but seeing I'm going back to school in September, it's probably going to be 250 for another year. :)

Another thing that teases me more, is the thought of having a summer convertible instead of a bike. With a summer car, I can put my winter car on theft and fire only, saving a good chunk of change from insurance alone. With a summer car, I can go out in my t-shirt, shorts and flip flop, I can still have wind blowing in my face, and I'm probably in less danger than on a bike. VERY tempting idea, but at the same time, I like gearing up like a power ranger to go out for a ride, I like riding in 20km circles just to get coffee from the Tim Hortons 1km away, and I like the feeling I get riding in general.

Whoa, thanks for jacking up our rates, champ.

Oh ya genius, they jacked the rates for everyone because of my claim. Iv been paying insurance for 16 year, have multiple cars, bikes, house, life....... im pretty sure they are still winning. Im a mechanic and buy things that need work and fix them. If you have no idea what the **** your talking about just keep your mouth closed. Some people are so stupid it amazes me.

But This is Max Power's second season riding, he's got to share all the knowledge he learned last season. Helpful stuff in every thread he posts in.
Btw, op also drives a Vantage. Worried about cost... Lol

Ok so instead of asking your now just arguing. Sell your bike and drive your car, it's not for everybody and if you can't justify the costs it's obviously not for you.

Never once have I thought "gee maybe my time would be better spent mowing the lawn and working than being here at the track for the last 3 days".

don't want to judge but OP just comes across as some guy who didn't have his heart set on riding in the first place and was more of a "look at me, I got a motorcycle" type of rider...

There's plenty out there that do it for the image but they never last. They come posting dumb **** like this trying to get support from others and then they're gone when they realize just owning a bike doesn't make you a rider...

This is a troll thread.
OP has a Maserati and Ducati. Or maybe he just have really bad financial planning

it costs a lot of money to be a high rolling poser...

I think the thread title should have been; Posing: Is it really worth it?

If this is true...then LAWL

Yep, romper room topic "car spotting" apparently he owns a Vantage, Corse Se, and a Ducati. Rofl! What he doesn't realize is that a Burgman 650 could easily replace all three...
