Do some online research now, so you have an idea of what you like. Some people will say get the best stuff you can afford. I'm more of the get what you need and see what works. The stuff I started with 5 years ago is very different than what I use (most of the time) now. And bring $$cash$$. Makes transactions easier. I'm Italian so haggling is in my blood. I would expect you to need $500~ for entry level stuff.
Helmet ~$200
Jacket ~$200
Gloves ~$50
Boots ~$100
If you want pants/ kevlar jeans and anything else, add more.
