Riding Gear

Hello everyone!

I got my M1 today and I am planning on doing local safety course in Brampton in May. I am looking to buy some gear helmet, gloves, jacket, etc. Are there any good shops around Brampton/Mississauga area that don't charge a arm and a leg. I just finished college so I do not have a lot of funds available. I liked a lot of products from revzilla but all the prices are in USD. I am willing to buy used gear but I could not find any deals on this site.

Also regarding bike I am looking at a Ninja 300 abs or Grom. I am 5'6 215lbs. Hopefully under 200 by end of spring.

Doesn't look like there are any ReGear shops out that way but it might be worth the drive out this way to checkout the one in Oshawa - lots of liquidation/consignment gear typically for a fraction of MSRP/new.

Don't be afraid to scour Kijiji as well, including posting a wanted ad - you may be surprised.

GP Bikes in Whitby, biggest store as far as gear goes, you can try on whatever you like without sells people following you around
Royal Distributing in Whitby, right next door to GP Bikes, big store, more affordable stuff, won't find high end stuff there, try everything freely
Riders Choice in Mississauga, small store, lots of gear, more expensive stuff
Brampton Powersports, bike dealer, some clothing, affordable stuff

x2 Royal Distributing, especially if you're out this way already to check out ReGear as per my last response. At Royal, ask for Michelle - she will go out of her way to help you, awesome saleslady.

Everyone's given you input on where to get gear.

As for this part, I'd recommend the Ninja. However; get an insurance quote first it might make your decision for you.

Go to the stores to try everything on but buy online.

The ninja is a great first bike.

How about actually supporting a brick and mortar store (of which there are less and less of every year) instead of using them as a dressing room and then ditching them?

We found Royal's prices very good, and the aforementioned sales lady that helped us (for geez, a good solid hour the first time we were there) was a great benefit that you're not going to get online.

Don't get me wrong, I order a lot of stuff online, but there are times that the service experience with a brick and mortar store is worth the few extra bucks.

Budget minded rider. Go for bricks and mortar for stuff like a helmet. Try it on. Wear it for a bit. Get a feel.

Same with footwear.

Those things I need to see and try out before I buy so I avoid on line.

As for gear, I'd start out used. Kijiji. Lots of folks dump perfectly good stuff because of color or it doesn't look right or fit. And it's in perfect condition and you get it at way less than retail.

Be patient with bike purchase. Do the riders course and try out some of the options available.

I'd look for something used but as spring approaches, less options and room to negotiate on price.

There are just as many stores now as 10 years ago. Some close, some open. It's normal. Support when it makes sense. If it's 10-20% more expensive vs. online, I'll buy local but when they charge double or triple, they can forget about it. Also a lot of local stores have a quite amusing idea of what customer service is.

Kijiji is by far the best place when you're on a budget. Have to be patient and check it constantly. Also don't be scared by the asking price. Gear is often difficult to sell privately.
I bought 3 brand new, composite Scorpion helmets a month ago for $260. Initial asking price was $150/helmet. In the store they would be around $300 each.

As far as the motorcycle is concerned, get a Ninja 250 instead of 300 - way cheaper.
Don't worry about ABS too much.
Grom will be super slow considering your weight, it's also not a highway bike.
A bit of a toy.

By the way, this thread should be in the New Riders sub-section if any mods are reading...

that 10-20%(actually way more) is what it costs them to allow you to come in and try it on.

OP, where are you located and whats your head size, there is a size L full face helmet sitting here that was worn twice by a girl that used to live here. Its wht/red graphic, not ugly, nearly new, its yours for a twelve pk of hieneken. Small cans not tall boys.

I live in Brampton. Mavis/407. I have no idea what my head size is. Probably will have to try it on.

If you go out that way, I may join you.
If the meet up is near DJ, Crankcall we can meet up at my dad'd place. He lives right there as well.
Sorry for the hijack
Back on topic, I have some Joe Rocket gloves in medium that I can let go cheap-ish

Edit: great, now I have to watch PPilot's video on how to multi quote on the pc

Dj, your 10 mins from my house.
You can just go to CTC or Marks work warehouse and get the cheapest work boot if its just to get through a course.

@ joe, we may get a swap in yet.

Highly agree with this.
I am in Brampton and drive out to ReGear drop stuff off. I go on a Saturday. Way less traffic about mid morning. They have lots of new helmets with good price ranges. Loads of choices. Boots, pants , etc.
Plus you are near GP Bikes and Royal. Not a wasted trip.
