Wait till your course. If you're gonna drop a bike might as well be the one at rti instead of yours. :) High of 3 is still freezing for a bike btw

I'll chime in on the road/weather warning. I've got a thread about my first spill which happened around this time last year in a parking lot. Once the sun starts to go down the temps drop rapidly and re-freeze any moisture on the asphalt that can be hard to see. This makes it real easy to lose traction from bad clutch control, maneuvering or braking. Cold tires, road salt and inexperience increase the likelihood. By all means go for it. Just be cautious while you're out there having fun. It's not quite spring yet.

+1, this is true! though on an m1 you shouldn't be out once the sun goes down....your tires won't be too sticky

So the bike is 100% insured and good to go on the road. Tomorrow is supposed to have a high of 7 and I am expecting to take it out in the afternoon when it's the warmest. I doubt I'll get any higher than 10 km/h but just more for clutch/brake feel control at slow speeds. Of course I will be very cautious and stick to up and down my street most likely.

Oh, an important point if you didn't know yet is to not FIST your front brake... 2 Fingers is all you need. Its not like a bicycle. It may surprise you how fast and hard (lol) you can actually stop and you may not be prepared to put your foot down.

I strongly agree, I would hold off until after your RTI course. If you drop your bike you have something to lose but you can drop their bikes with nothing to lose. Btw if you ride their CBR125 and learn on that and jump behind your ninja 250 you would appreciate it a lot more. I had the same exp when I went from their cbr125 to my ninja250, felt like a monster! Lol

Lol - I'll try to exercise self control as best as possible. It all depends on how I "feel" on the bike. But I think there is no harm in just taking it out for 30 mins or so and learning the clutch and brake. I am definitely not going to take it out on the roads.. or be an idiot with it; just up and down on my street in front of my house in a quiet neighbourhood.

I will update this after. Either from home or from the hospital.

Yeah, I'm 90% sure I'll be zipping around town in no time. All day saturday is a lot of time to learn.

I'm planning to hop on a(my) bike for the first time this Saturday in Mississauga. I'm planning to take it over to a parking lot next to my house and ride around on it and get a feel for it.

Can anyone recommend anything I should be doing or being cautious about my first time out? Does anyone have any reason they would recommend me not take the bike out this Saturday by myself?

I'll be alone since I don't have any friends that ride bikes so I'll be teaching myself so any advice would be helpful.

Cheers.

Just take it slow and at your own pace. Since you drive a manual car you'll get the throttle / clutch control down pretty fast but this time you'll be shifting with your left foot instead of your right hand lol

I took my cbr125r out last year with just my M1 and honestly I was scared but I took it slow on side streets, built up my confidence then took her out on main roads then up and down the Allen road. Then I sold it, finished RTI and bought my wr250x a week later lol

Good luck and be safe !

Exercise some patience dude there is still a lot if salt on the road and with cold tires it could be a recipe for a disaster. I'd just wait for the course.

May I ask what parking lot this is? Maybe one of the people here or myself can help you out for a bit if you'd like.

One more piece of advice from my own experience (luckily a RTI CBR125R) is to always make sure the bars are straight before taking off. When I did my course (first time on a motorcycle ever) I messed up a turn and had to stop quickly before getting too close to another rider. Stopped fine, but since I still had my bars cranked when I tried to start off again I was on my side 1 second later. Very glad that wasn't my new CBR250RA waiting for me in the garage.

EDIT: Also to add as I see you might be practicing alone is to try and get someone else out there with you. When I went down during the course I had my leg pinned and couldn't get the bike off myself without the possibility of actually injuring my leg (and my pants) pulling it out. Even when I hit the streets after the course, I still had someone follow in a car the first 2-3 times I was out, just to play it safer.
