Ridiculously high quotes for a 250

Hi there,
So I'm a 20 year old girl with 4 years of driving experience, I have my G, and I just got my M2.
I have a clean driving record, no tickets, no accidents - all good. Did the safety course and all.

I want to get a 2005 Ninja 250, and before the M2 I called SF for a quote and they said 1200. Now, I called them and they said that they cannot insure me because I don't have 6 years of driving experience. The only way they'd insure me is if I had other insurance with them, which, since I don't own a car or a house - I don't.
So I called Jevco and they said 3300, TD's online quote was even higher.

Some other company told me no just because it's a sports bike and it didn't matter that it was just a 250.

Seriously? The bike only costs like $2000, why is insurance up the *** for the 250?
I can't afford this nonsense.

Help! Any suggestions?

SF is only good for 25+ with 5+ years with the G (it was 5 yrs when I joined, maybe they've increased it to 6) and no tickets (or 1 minor).

Still I am surprised TD did not give you a better quote. There are ways to decrease with them:
-Tell them you took the M2 course
-Install an approved alarm
-if someone in your family is part of a professional society (eg: PEO)
-if someone else in your family is under TD
-Also depends on when you got your M1, think it goes down after 1 year with the M1

Like others have said SF will give you a much larger discount after you have attained 5 years of driving experience, i recently got a quote and what was required was 5 years of experience not 6 years.

In all honesty the alarm and the safety course do very little in terms of giving discounts. It might be best to hold out for another year, or consider an older 250 so that the insurance is less.

Cheers

Zend

TD should give you a lower quote.

I'm 20,i only pay just above 1000 for my 250. Its my first season too.
Then again i live in Stouffville (north of markham) and have a car with them which gave me like 40% off.

Im guessing you live close to DT and maybe a condo/apt? if i moved to rez for school then i would be paying close 3500. (Postal Code matters)

riders plus gave me the best rate for a standard 600cc bike. I'd expect they can do the same for the a sport 250cc

Ummmm, as far as I know Riders Plus doesn't insure sport bikes PERIOD and also doesn't insure anyone under 25 (I had my monster with them for a couple of years).

OP, your best bet is to wait a year. After a year you will have 5+ years of driving experience so you can go with State Farm and after a year Jevco will also put you under the "Experienced" group which is significantly less.

TD is generally great once you hit 30 years old, even for SS they are decent. Under 30 though (even 29) SF is the ONLY choice for SS.

Unfortunately, young age is related to being an irreponsable human being and that acounts for most of the high premiums you'll get. I'd suggest for you to wait another year (riding season is a few weeks shy of being over anyway) and then get a bike. It would also help if you can get someone to co-sign with you, a relative perhaps.

I'm not saying that YOU are irresponsible, but that's the general conception for insurance companies.

On another note, whenever you get your bike, PM me... I'll ride with you :agave:

I'm quite responsible actually. So I've been told :p
I might get a bike now just because it's cheaper and just store it in my garage for the winter. I still have to check who my parents are with and see if they'll give me a nice rate.
As for next season riding, will do! ;)

You gotta pay to play!
I know, but where's the line, my friend?
Insurance shouldn't be costing 2x more than the bike - that's a bit excessive in my opinion.

TD's quote was 4500.

Really guys? Really?
Insane.
In your 1st quote you said online quote.

Online quotes mean NOTHING. Cannot be relied on.
Now if you got 4500 over the phone, i rest my case lol.

You are not paying for the bike, you are paying for the liability. Collision/fire/theft are what pay for the bike, you waive those, you are not insuring the bike at all.

The majority of the cost is just the shared (amongst every registered driver) cost of you killing people and wrecking their stuff, adjusted for the likelihood that someone with your age/experience/location will do some damage.

My bad.

Give it a year it'll cut almost in half.
From 3850-2250 for me, just for having my moto license for a full year. This is with TD for a GS500F.
A 250 wold only be about 2-400 less for insurance (when I asked about them)

I called them and you're right, they gave me a different quote: $4869.

I think I'm going to go ride my bicycle now.
