Rides around downtown Toronto area for 125 cc newbie rider

Hi, I'm a brand-spanking new rider and have the Honda Grom which is a 125 cc. So no highways for me. Can anyone recommend good routes to ride around Toronto that are easy to get to from downtown Toronto (i.e. doesn't use any highways and not too long to get to) and that don't have really high speed limits?

Thanks. Also looking for people to ride with on occassion.

I saw a Grom on the DVP yesterday! Bayview would be a nice road assuming you're talking about north-south, 50/60 km/h and has some twists.

WHere abouts do you live? East or West? You could probably manage on the DVP, you jsut won't have that power to go faster if you have to. You can probably get about 110-120 out of a 125, assuming you don't weigh 200 pounds. I can give you some good routes, if you tell me East or West :)

Actually around the Yonge and Bloor area - so central downtown (which is a bummer since all the routes are east or west) - but willing to ride out for an hour or so to get to nice routes. Too soon for me on the DVP :p

You have an M2? If you have M1 no highways (legally) for you nay way. As for actual good riding routes down town....... Good luck. You hit traffic and all you do is sprain your wrist clutch in, out in, out in .... out...... in out ARRRG.....Thats why i do a lot of my rides at 1 30 in morning. And I normally go up north for some good roads. I don't trust toronto streets either, you get into a lean, and boom pot hole, then you high or low side and get super ****** you messed up your bike, to hell with my body my bikes hurt!!!! lol... We ahve what? twin snakes in scarb... And even that I don't think is worht the ride and i live in the east end (east york)bayview can be fun allen expressway for more a speed run and ther eis one road thats pretty cool that cuts through the parky area at the bottom of the bayview extension. I"ll look to see what its called

Head up Yonge till Alymer which then becomes Rosedale Valley. Then turn left at Bayview. Then turn right at Pottery Road.

That should keep you entertained for a bit.

^^^ Rosedale valley could be fun.
Careful in traffic if you are new. That's far more dangerous than only going 90 on the DVP (god knows most people only go 80 there anyway).
The Grom looks like such a blast. I was stuck at some lights in Yonge and some dude came ripping through the lanes. I was so jelly.
I think cagers are much more forgiving of rider shenanigans if you are on a scooter or a smaller bike like a Grom. I didn't notice any rage given to the Grom then.
Scooters are lame though.

Agree with this...

If you are new.. Riding downtown in regular traffic is worse then the dvp.

The closest calm streets to you are..
Go up to bloor, go east, cross the dvp bridge.. Turn left at broad view..

About a Mile up you will see Mortimer street and sammon street turn into those and just ride around

Mount Pleasant cemetary - be respectful - it'll be a pleasant spot to get your feet wet.

isn't lakeshore all backed up these days due to construction on the gardiner?

Thanks everyone for the great ideas. I've been getting my feet wet with riding in the city, getting better at it.

I may try these routes early on a Sunday morning when there isn't much traffic..thanks so much!

Though I am not the OP I have to say thanks to all of you this is awesome. I haven't had a ton of time to discover decent riding routes in the city. I live in the east end and I have to say not always in the mood to drive an hour out to have a decent road (though I realize i'll still have to do that).

But at least I have some new rides to check out.

If you have more decent rides for a east T.O rider please do tell!

and as for OP Groms ROCK! great choice.

This is a good thread. I'm a new rider as well but coming in from the West end in Etobicoke. Have ridden into downtown via Lakeshore, Bloor and Queensway/King St. but the traffic makes this less than fun. I've also ridden westbound to Hamilton via Lakeshore and that was nice, especially through Oakville and Burlington. Any other suggestions in the West end?
