Ride Report: 2021 Summer Solstice Ride

I'll book the 20th and 21st off today at work.

Any gravel roads @shanekingsley? I assume not much as they'd slow things down considerably.
Awesome!
No gravel on here, unless something comes up unexpectedly. I think I've been on every road on these routes and they are all paved.

May try and meet you at one of your stops along the route, just to get out and about.

Sounds awesome. I’m north of Cobourg so I’ll hook up at Port Perry and good for the rest of the route. Pace/food/range no problem!
Pretty sure the bridge is still out on the 504 so it’s a gravel bypass for a few Km but easily done.

Shane -- what will you be riding this year? I was thinking of heading back to the 70s and riding one of my old girls. They will keep up with a Wee, not a FZ1.

Well I totalled my black VStrom a few weeks ago and I'm giving the orange one away, so all I will have left is the FZ1 for this. I just ordered a Corbin seat for it this morning, but I'm not sure if it will arrive in time, even though they said they would put a rush on it.

Ride whatever you like - you'll be just fine to keep up on one of the old girls. I have literally ridden the FZ1 about 200 km so far, so I will ride it more cautiously than my VStrom until I'm used to it. I really think this ride will be slower in the corners than some of our previous rides, but we'll make up for it by hopefully being more organized with our breaks.

Would love to test my mettle on this ride with you guys but I have a previous engagement not to mention I'd be starting from the wrong side of the gta.

Shane will normally stop and wait for you at certain intersections along the route.
It could be scary to have a group all trying to keep up, and on top of each other in the twisties.

Can confirm. I’m the slowest in the group and have never felt left behind.

Group always waits at the next turn off the current road so I know which way to follow.

My skill level hasn’t exceeded that of the bike yet.

EDIT: Both 20th and 21st booked off.

How bad is the crashed Vstrom? Is it salvageable?

Typical front end damage with bent forks. Given that it had higher mileage, it wasn't worth it for me to salvage it. Insurance picked it up yesterday and paid me $500 more for it than I bought it for, despite now being bone stock and with 50,000km more than when I bought it.

I did take every good part off it and move them over to my old orange one, so even though that one has 170k on it, that bike is sweet and will run like new with a touch of needed maintenance.

It's almost that time for another year long "what bike should I buy thread".

Which one has the suspension setup?

Need to dig up my old thread for a cheapo communicator / bluetooth helmet kit. Riding all day without music gets boring fast.

Vacation - approved
Wife - approved

Now let's hope for good weather.

Don't forget to RTFM. I had a new setup and it randomly started blasting music about two minutes in. I didn't know how to turn the volume down.

When I was on my trip down south, my helmet communicator (Cardo Pactalk Bold) crapped out on me - the little charging port inside the unit that attaches to the helmet had all the pins come out, when I removed the charging cord. I looked up the problem and seems it can be a slightly common issue. So I called Cardo and they are sending me another unit under warranty and were so easy to deal with. So whatever you buy, make sure they have a decent warranty if you are not getting a cheapo one.

Also, if you don't find one in time and if I get my replacement one in time, then you can borrow it for the ride. I can use my wife's communicator instead.

Group 1 is now full - one of the riders from last year confirmed he is back in, so that means all three of us who started and ended together last year are back in play.

Can we get a group 2 going to make things interesting?
